: Max tire size for 404's
lt1fj62 05-10-2011, 07:20 PM Hey, just wanted to ask the gurus what is the biggest tire I can use on 404's without compromising it. I read original tires are 41's. I would like to go with bigger mearts, 44's, 47's perhaps. Do you think 47's are to big for stock 404's? What are most running?
jh206 05-10-2011, 07:26 PM All depends on weight and power, search this forum its been asked ...
Gunmetalcruz 05-10-2011, 08:00 PM it seems to me that JR has been sucessfull in keeping his together with 39's. If you really think you need bigger rubber then i would skip the 404's and go 416 or u1300's
I'm not an expert, but 42's with stock stuff,
44- 47's with aftermarket (steel) boxes
44's are too wide and nearly impossible to fit on a big offset rim such as a stock H1, so they hang way out and leverage the hub (gears) and the cast box. (on a typical 8 lug rim)
My 2 cents
Public_AenimA 05-11-2011, 11:47 AM I'm running 14.00R20 XLs on mine. Had it out wheeling about a half dozen times, no problems yet. I DO have the Weps horseshoe braces though.
There is a dude in belgium running 14.00R20 Nokias on his without the braces and he hasn't reported any breakages yet either.
sceep 05-11-2011, 11:56 AM 100% useage, and weight of right foot, dependant.
lt1fj62 05-11-2011, 10:18 PM Cool, thanks for the replys.. Im looking at some 42'' Good Yerar styckies which measuse up a true 42''. The reason I was asking is, some 47'' LTB would be badass but may be pushing it IMO... WEPS braces are good idea anyway... What would be the IDEAL wheel backspacing for these 404's on 42'' tires?
zukibrit 05-12-2011, 02:00 AM a mates running 44/16/16 boggers and has had a couple of probs
portals comming loose every outing
broken locker actuator (but that was his fault)
and this week stripped ten teeth of the crown wheel (not sure how he managed that)
my own set will be running 40/13.5/20 mickey thomson baja claws on original mog rims
wendleburger 05-12-2011, 01:54 PM stripped ten teeth of the crown wheel (not sure how he managed that)

I stripped teeth off the front crown wheel as well. I put it down to the 35 years of hard service my axles did with the army before I got them.
Are the tyres you are going to run the sticky ones? I'm running the sticky 40 claws in the 18" rim size. I think they are close to the perfect tyre for a 404 axle, the 18" wheel clears the portal perfectly.
lt1fj62 05-12-2011, 07:48 PM Yea, 42'' Goodyear Stikies 17'' wheel
zukibrit 05-13-2011, 03:02 AM im not to sure is there away of telling the difference
as these was imported into england by silverline for another customer that backed out so i got them at cost price
so i grabed them to go onto the mog axled yj that im building

Dunno what youre asking, Normally on ''sticky'' compound tires it will say something like ''not for hiway use''
Was that your question....?
zukibrit 05-14-2011, 02:31 AM yes i was asked if these was the sticky compound but i very much doubt it becaue the original customer was putting them on a road going range rover
carnt see anything that says not for highway use
lt1fj62 05-14-2011, 10:21 PM Those look like Mickey Thompsons. I dont believe MT sells sticky rubber...
zukibrit 05-15-2011, 05:03 AM wow try reading the full thread
they are indeed mt baja claws
and directly below the post which i said what they was
was a reply by wendleburger saying he had 40/18 sticky claws
thats why i asked how i could tell the difference
tjmark 05-15-2011, 01:02 PM I am twisting stub shafts now with 39's reds.. But i will fix that and see what breaks next..
I agree with what is mentioned. If i lived in moab i'd never break i never had to spin the tires... But at the hammers i break a box of rocks it seems..
lt1fj62 05-15-2011, 10:45 PM Yep, being only a couple hours from The Hammers, thats hat we normally wheel other than down in Baja. Hope they stand up to some 42 stickies. We'll see
yellowk20 05-16-2011, 01:39 PM Sorry for Hi-jacking I found this thread searching for 404 info ,but I wonder how 404's would hold up to these tires Firestone 16.5-16.1 they measure out about 40" tall .
The rig would be a TJ with a brute conversion, 330hp small block/700R4/NV241.
Mud and Rocks are what we wheel up here
zack norwood 05-16-2011, 02:10 PM I am running a set of 42" Krawlers on my Mog and no problems yet but remember a stock 404 motor only puts out 90 hp. I did have to make custom rear wheel spacers to clear the spring bucket because of the 14.5 width.
I just got back from the Hammers ( send in your letters people ) and the tires worked great

yellowk20 05-16-2011, 04:51 PM Thanks, I may stick to 1-ton GM axles . Theres a Guy on the local board who has a Complete 404 minus engine for really cheap, and I was considering buying it for the axles
lt1fj62 05-17-2011, 07:41 PM Nice video Zack. Whats your wheelbase?

I like those!
zack norwood 05-18-2011, 10:26 AM Stock 404 are 114" it looks shorter because I bobbed and dovetailed the rearend
yellowk20 05-18-2011, 10:39 AM I like those!
there Fairly inexpensive, around 220 per tire when I bought them a couple years ago

The sticky ones say "For rock crawling use only - do not exceed 40mph" on the sidewall. Other than that they look identical.
folo007 05-18-2011, 07:42 PM Its subjective... I have just over a 100hp in my 87 4runner. I have the WEPS horse shoe braces, 4340 chromo shafts up front and 47 inch LTBs for tires. I have been on only one wheeling trip so far. Just consider the original Mercedes design and wheel at your own risk. Good luck... I'm glad I went to mogs.

lt1fj62 05-19-2011, 09:50 PM Hey WEPS, I also need the pinion conversion flange.. what option do I have???
pinion flanges are one thing that I do not make. sorry.
folo007 05-21-2011, 04:31 AM Hey WEPS, I also need the pinion conversion flange.. what option do I have???
I got my flange off of ebay. It was around $300 shipped from the UK i think. If you go that route you will need a machine shop to mate it to your drive shaft flange and your bolt pattern. It was very simple to install.
lt1fj62 05-21-2011, 08:34 AM Cool, thanks, Ill try EXEXT or???

Nice move up backdoor Zach!
How long have you had your 42 krawlers? I just got mine and haven't wheeled yet. How wide and what backspace are the stock wheels? I got TrailReady 20 by 10 with a 6" backspace, but my WMS is further out due to the disk brake conversion. Just curious because I was worried a 8.5" wide wheel would be too narrow. What pressure do you run and what do you weigh?
By the way lt1fj62, I ran 42 Irocs on 404s 6 years without a single thing breaking. 200 hp I6 Jeep motor and 3,600 lb buggy.
Here's the current buggy.

Thanks Andy!
zack norwood 05-31-2011, 08:51 AM Nice buggy, any action shots? I have had my krawlers about a year now and like most new tires they don't work well until you get them broken in a little bit. After a few trips to the Hammers they are working great now. My Mog is on a diet but still tips the scales at about 5k ( 3000 lbs over the front axle ) so I air down 15 psi front and 8 rear. I am not sure what the back space is on a stock 404 20x9 rim is, I am sure that some one on the forum will know.

Nice to see someone else that knows how to properly wheel a 404!! Time for coil overs though. Made my mog lighter and much more tunable.

You really know how to put a thrashing on a mog!! How did you get your 42s a year ago???? I just found out they were available a few months ago. Anyway, I don't have any action shots with the new tires on. Since you showed your flop, I guess I'll show you this one.

lt1fj62 06-01-2011, 07:40 AM Verry nice work. Its good to know you can safely wheel 404's on 42'' with no problems. And I said wheel......:D
RKREADY 06-29-2011, 09:20 PM Mac with Exaxt once told me that 404's can be built to be to handle anything as long as you stay within three criteria:
Max 44 in tires
Max 300 horses
Max 5000 lb rig
If you stay along these guidelines you shouldn't have problems.......i always think about his blazer. That thing weighs more than 5k, has over 300hp, and 44s and he has had few problems given how much he absolutely thrashes it!
tjmark 06-29-2011, 09:48 PM Nice to see all the 404 rigs.. I'm slowly converting all my wheeling bros to mog axles.. I like the look of those 42 REDS!!!
Ohh and i'm droping in 650 hp this week i'll let everyone know how it holds up this season.. CTM stubhafts are almost done.
lt1fj62 06-29-2011, 10:51 PM Its gottna kickass with that Motor Mark. I spoke with White bro and Il be seen him this week for the other Pinion conversion. thanks for the heads up. Now Im looking for a Dana 300 to do a Toy/D300 doubler. Let me know if you see one around.
