: Crank Nut stripped. Help
broncoboy351 11-26-2002, 10:56 AM :flipoff2: Flame away. I just stripped my front crank pulley bolt trying to use the frame/steering box trick. Anyone have any good ideas on how to get it off?
Anyone try a stripped-nut extractor made by craftsman?
HELP PLEASE.
Coop 50 11-26-2002, 11:17 AM I've heard of people having problems with these, I never have. I always use a hex (6 sided) socket, with a breaker bar, if necessary. If a 6 sided socket is slipping, you're screwed. Maybe somebody else has some ideas, but you might be cutting the pulley off to get at it.
miniyota 11-26-2002, 11:23 AM go get one of those craftsman tools and take it off. if it doesn't work take it back no questions asked!:D satisfation gaurenteed or your money back!:D
jhama78 11-26-2002, 11:31 AM Use an air chisel in the direction of the yellow arrow in the pic. I had one crank bolt that was stuck and this was the only way I could get it out. Good luck.
obviously the bolt in this pic isnt a crank bolt but it is a similar style bolt as a crank bolt.

OOP'S 11-26-2002, 12:37 PM What kind of scoket were you using, 6 or 12 point. always use 6 point on bolts/nuts that big!!!!!!:D
Bigger Valves 11-26-2002, 12:39 PM 'cept now he can take a size smaller 12 point socket and beat the mofo on there w/ a BFH.. That'd be the cheapest to try before u go buyin nut extractors.. cost ya one 12 point pos socket
broncoboy351 11-26-2002, 12:43 PM I am FAWKED FAWKED FAWKED. At least the BBQ I planned on cooking will still taste good.
you could try welding a big ol nut to the bolt, let it cool, then have at it again

Weld a the socket to the stripped bolt, I needed to do this on my tranny fill plug, 2 mins and it was off, and after grinding off the weld to get the plug out I was still able to reuse the socket...
Alabamatoy 11-26-2002, 03:28 PM Drill the head off, remove the pulley, do whatever and replace with a new bolt.
BJ On Roids 11-26-2002, 03:55 PM ive stripped every bastard bolt on my car  starting to think toyotas are made to strip threads, or bolt heads :flipoff2: (its all old stuff though)

Amen to that(me too)
imrtoy 11-26-2002, 06:39 PM I just had the same problem today. I what i did was take my torch and heat up the bolt pretty hot. Then Used a pair of vise grips and it came off with ease. Just remember that you will heat the oil seal if you do this. But it works every time! Good luck!
tansloth 11-26-2002, 07:06 PM i have a 3foot pipe wrench that usually helps in these kinds of situations, thats if it will fit on...:D :D
if that dosnt work.. i agree with weld a big ass nut to it...
good luck;)
I have used the air chisel trick many times. It works great.

I guess you don't have that gentle touch.:flipoff2:
I haven't stripped any but I broke off a head bolt once. That was a major whore to get out.

PJ Blaster and 6 point sockets, 12 point sockets are for nerds. The sockets that I use the most art the 6 point inpact sockets. :D

YES - do this! It's easy, and it works. Just make sure you use an impact socket and not one of the cheap chrome ones.
