is your rim 3 3/4 back space?
This is a 33 X 12.50 and it fits like a champ. You need to make or buy a spacer that bolts on to your carrier that will add 1-2 inches of room to fit the tire

How about putting a tube, and tire plugs in the console, and some tire tools? Your tailgate will last longer.

The Math tells me you'll spend about 4-800 bucks on a tire carrier now.

In six months you'll spend about 4-800 bucks on a tire carrier, plus you'll spend about 3-700 bucks on repairing the tailgate damage at the body shop.

i carried a 32" spare on stock carrier for 2 years and for 6 months now have a 35" on there. no problems YET. my custom bumper is 2"X6" and actually sits right under the spare- slightly wedged against the bottom of spare (this was un-planned). the tire is firm and doesn't shake/vibrate. i have driven a lot of washboard roads and many hardcore trails. the most stress the tailgate is subjected to is when it is open.

i forgot to mention that these rims in the pic are 3 3/4 back spaced. their 8 x 15 rims. my buddy is running a 8 x 15 non-back spaced rim and he doesn't need the spacer I refered to above.
I had to make a simular spacer for my cj when I mounted it with a 36 inch tire.

well this all helps becasue i could propaly build a whole bumber and tire carrier in the future, but for now do you think just putting some 1/4 steel would help on both sides?

I havent done the reasearch, but I think the Warn Bumper and carrier is pretty cheap. I dont know what there selling them for retail, but the jobber price is 260.15.

what do you mean by this?

All I did was copy the bolt pattern of the rim and extend it out with a 2 x 2 box tube 2 inches. Run some new bolts and your i business. It wont' hurt your gate as you can see in the pic, we also put 2 specialized rock hoppers on the carrier and it holds all 3 items just fine.

My buddy lives in so cal and he'll build you what you need for cheap.

what i mean by putting a 1/4 plate is that on the front side put a srtip of 2 or 3 inch 1/4 flat pieace of steel, and then do the same to back side , then drill holes through the steel witch lines up with the stock tire carrier and then put a long bolt right though all holes to hold it all together, make any sense?

The biggest problem with putting a large spare on a YJ tailgate is not the gate itself. If you want to do that, it will strengthen the gate at the mounts for the tire, sure, but it wont do anything to strengthen the tailgate mounts themselves. Through my experience, this is where most of the problems occur.

thanks keith.

I build a swing out rack that will hold over 1k lbs. it's made of 2" .120 wall tube and will be attatched to your roll cage by going through the body near the top of the tub.

this set up w/ the rear bumper and tire carrier I'll make and weld on to your rig for $350.

I don't have pictures right now as my YJ is in a container crossing the Atlantic (west to east!), BUT...

I run 33"s, and the tyre hits the tube bumper, after staring at the tailgate for a long time, i had a lightbulb go off over my head!

I got hold of some 3/16 steel plate, cut it so it was the same WIDTH as the stock tyre carrier, and about the same height, PLUS A FEW INCHES.

I had 5 holes drilled the same place as the stock locations, THEN THE SAME HOLES DRILLED ABOUT 3 - 4 INCHES FURTHER UP. (See TERRIBLE ms paint picture for idea of the hole locations....!)

I bolted the plate to the stock boltholes in the tailgate (after giving it 3 coats of undercoat, and 4 of black gloss!), then BOLTED THE STOCK CARRIER TO THE HOLES WHICH ARE 3 - 4 inches FURTHER UP.

Now the stock tyre carrier sits 3 - 4 inches higher, still close to the door, and works just fine!

Cost to me? ZERO!!!

Hey UKJeeper, how long ago did you do this? And have you examined all the bolt-holes to see if there is any stress fractures or anything appearing?

I'm just curious, because basically what you've done is made a lever that has the ability to put a lot more stress on your tailgate, and especially considering that you are now holding a larger (and heavier) tire at the end of that lever.

I'm not trying to knock your idea, cause i think it is a good and simple solution. (I like simple solutions :D )
But, i'd be concerned that over the long term, you'd have issues with too much stress on your tailgate.
