The lockers are Detroits. They're cheap and you could put them in Rockwells blindfolded.

Wheelbase is 112 -113 (so is Dirks)

The rear steer is basically nothin' special. On mine, (this post) I turned the diff. 180 degrees in the housing to center the pinion. The tie rod stayed in its original position on the back of the axle. Then I mounted a 10" ram to a bracket held down by a few of the diff bolts and to the original steering knuckle arm. I drilled out the tapered hole to 1" and bolted the ram, and 1"heim joint for the tie rod on top of the arm. The ram is controlled by a 4way valve located just to the left of the driver's seat.

Dirks (O.D.Green FJ40) is basically the same set up but instead of turning the diff, We cut 7.25" out of the long side of the housing and reassembled the axle with 2 short side shafts. This put his pinion close to center (but not as close as turning the diff). Yes, his rear is narrower than the front, but he wanted it that way for turning radius and diff clearance.

I hope that answered your questions. If not, you can call the shop @ (970)874-1272 or look keep watching for close ups.

by the way... What are "ricer effects"?

1 It was free

2 The rig was to far gone to restore (so I told myself)

3 I have others

I'm still working on close-ups. I have a couple ready if somebody can post them for me. My good friend "bruter" is trying but he is a newbie and can't figure out how.

Are the hubs flipped in?

What is the backspacing and width of the rims?

What is your outside tire to outside tire measurement?

Thanks, getting ready to put rockwells under the toy and trying to decide on wether to flip the hubs or not.

The brake kits are for the Toyota P/U calipers and rotors (straight axle is best)

They are $45 a set (brackets and shims only) plus shipping. Let me know if you find them cheaper. We take credit cards so you can order them over the phone (970)874-1272

Now you tell me. I just sold my 4Runner front axle with the calipers and rotors (needed new rotors though). I'm putting Rockwells under the '85 4-Runner thing. Nolen, is due to finally work on a rig other than his...

This bracket is to attach the rotor and hold the caliper, right? The shim moves the rotor out the proper distance I guess. Any pictures of the bracket itself?

proffitt'scruisers
12-03-2002, 03:07 PM
FYI

I located my rear brake on the front of the axle. The rotor is between the driveline and pinion. I had to turn down the rotor .75" to clear the upper control arms during compression.

I did not use a proportioning valve but I may add one for some adjustability. The brake master cylinder is Toy P/U with vacuum assist.

The brakes are touchy but extremely efficient. These crawlers stop better than others I've built with 4 wheel discs.

Lance Morin
12-03-2002, 03:11 PM
That's why I hear some people just run one of the pinion brakes. However, that seem like you are putting a great deal of faith in one little part. I'd just assume run 2 and use a prop. valve if needed. Hmm, I guess the pickup M/C would work since you are only feeding 2 calipers and they are the size it's made for.

I hear ya. I have been wanting to run 44s for a while and knew the only way to do it was dana 60s or something like em. FIgured out i can get rockwells half as cheap and shave to have more ground clearance.

I'm thinking of moving things forward a bit. It's hard to say until I actually have the rockwells in the garage. I don't want to go super tall though. Ideally, I'll still be able to get in and out of my standard garage. Otherwise, I'll have to keep the new beast at a buddy's home shop with the 10ft rollup doors.

The rear will be easy because I have a mini (30") flatbed in the back of my 4Runner.

If you only at 3" BS up front on a 15" wheel, but still had .75" to the knuckle, couldn't you got to 3.5" and still have 1/4" of play? That would have gotten you down to 91" outside to outside on the front.

Also aren't the front and rear axles hubs the same distance apart if all the hubs are flipped in? If so, wouldn't your rear end then be 89" outside to outside (3" less than the front) or the front be 90.5"?

I'm just seeing that the math doesn't work on your measurements. It's close though. I'm looking to be about 90" oustide to outside on mine and was planning on 3.5" of back spacing on all 4 corners.

Just saw this. 1/4" doesn't seem like much room, especially when air them down to 5 pounds and run em over a fat pointed rock!! Don't you think they'll bulge more than that?? I went with .75" just for peace of mind I guess.

As for the other measurements, I am positive on the outside-outside measurements and positive on my backspacing but I cannot remember the wms-wms measurements right now. I'll measure again tonight if I remember. Anybody else know?

Cool.

I love it when threads like this are dug up!

BTW, I noticed on Proffitt's site that this rig is for sale!

Gulp.

Tornadoalley did a southwest CO alpine pass run this summer(I started the dang thing and didn't get to go:(...) and both groups stopped by at Jeremiah's place. Reports back indicated that he's a genuinely nice guy! Spent lots of chat time with them, showed them around the rig and the shop, rode them thru the Peachpit(tm). I've talked to him several times on the phone, and despite the fact that he's apparently pretty busy, doing obviously good work, he's never rushed conversation over the phone. I'm gonna throw him business when I can. Nice rig, great work, real swell guy! Don't see that very often, so I thought i'd point it out...

I gave the lengths in mm (one tenth of a centimetre) centimetres are only used by dressmakers, and one of them i aint.....

I am not sure how accurate my conversion from mm to inches is, as im not hugely familiar with inches and feet, but 25.1 mm per inch is nearabouts the conversion ratio i used...
