: Housings/tuging...flipping a Stand Ro
NOTPRETTY 11-28-2002, 02:02 AM Okay...here's are some real dumb questions that I don't know the answer to. If you pull the tubes out of a Dana standard housing and flip it over, is it the same as a Ford reverse rotation housing?
If yes, is this true for both D44 and D60 housings
And, do you have to do anything to ensure good oiling for the internals after the flip?
Next truly stupid question.
Re-tubing... I have searched and read several posts on how to get the rosette welds drilled/burned/Die-grinded out and how to get the tubes out(All of which sound a bit nutz)...but what I would like to know is what type of steel do you use for the tubing and what should you machine it to in order to be pressed in.
What difference in diameter should there be between the tube and the housing?
What does proper tubing cost per foot. And approximately what would a machine shop charge for just turning, pressing and welding the tubes and flanges?
leehall 11-28-2002, 06:37 AM I dont know about the rest of it . but if you flipp a reagular 44 the pinion will still be in the same place . therefore it will not be a revers rot . a rr the pinion will come in at the top . a chevey or a eb will come in inthe middle of the chunk . The benefet of rr is the pinion gear has more teath to teath action .
leehall 11-28-2002, 06:39 AM if you do flipp it you can use revers rotation gears that go in a ford .

Check your facts before you start spreading misinformation! Absolutely NOT true.
If you flip a standard rotation housing, it will run backwards!
As for retubing a dana44, what are you trying to make? I think there are probably better alternatives than retubing.

NO........................ that would be called an upside down standard housing.
There is no substitute for a high pinion housing.
NOTPRETTY 11-28-2002, 11:50 AM There are either several dumb people or I am not so dumb.
Anyone know the answers?
I know retubing is a pain, but if you have the time and tools...it is very cheap when you have pick n pull in your back yard. Atleast it is cheap for the donor parts. What I don't know is how much the tube cost to buy/turn/press/weld. And, having searched and read on pulling the tubes...I belive it can be done pretty easy...several people have.
Keep the information coming.
Happy...to hell with pita...day. Or is that peta...?

Uh, yeah that must be it. I bet you work for Dana too.
NOTPRETTY 11-28-2002, 12:10 PM RocSlut...Please enlighten me. Why can't you flip a standard. Remember...I already admitted it was a dumb question...but so far I still don't know why it won't work. I assume the thing turns the wrong way and that is the problem based on search about people trying to run marine engines...which run the other way. If that's it...let me know.
Otherwise...forget the flipping deal...say you bought just the center chunk...Tera low...and took it to be tubed. What are you talking $$$ wise? Anyone. Keep info coming...
;)
Nobody 11-28-2002, 12:11 PM so what are you trying to make???? passenger drop HP44?

The axle will run backwards, other words it will be a reverse rotation. It will run the wrong way! if you take you logical about teh marine engine, you'd need two axle like this. Else the axles would pull in different directions. Plus the Reverse sipral has special mods for the lubrication.
Do not use the term Reverse Rotaion! A Reverse Spiral axle does not turn in a reverse rotaion, nor the axle shafts! You might as well talk about the level of blinker fluid in your truck.
turtlehead 11-28-2002, 01:39 PM If you simply flip a standard rotation housing upside down the pinion will be on the wrong side of the ring gear causing it to spin backwards. This would work if you run a reverse rotation starter, and a custom reverse rotation distributor. Just kidding,... A reverse rotation front end is a bad term, It should just be called a high pinion. The housing is compleatly different which allows the ring gear and pinion to mesh in a way to allow for proper rotation. The term reverse rotation has caused much confusion in which I was unclear on two years ago. If you have a RR44 and a standard 44 side by side you will see the differences, and why simply flipping it won't work. As far as retubing, I got no help for you right now, other than it looks like a royal pain.
Good Luck

leehall 11-28-2002, 05:18 PM So i learnd something . Sorry for useing missleading facts . And no i dont work for dana . I would never work for an x brand company .
Dirtdragon 11-28-2002, 08:36 PM Well if you flip over the front and rear......they would at least turn in the same direction:flipoff2:

Don't forget to turn your driver seat around, too. You'll want to see where you're going:flipoff2:
Then what to do about the steering column....
Dirtdragon 11-29-2002, 08:54 AM The way I'd see it...through a clouded mind after thanksgiving is you'd have 1 forward and three reverse time for some better rear view mirrors:eek:
