: SM420 Question

OK, I got the Transfer case mated to the SM420 today (Thanks a million Extremebends for the instructions!)

I thought I had a Spaceghost plate from Gunmetalcruz, but the threads in the plate are metric, not standard.....I just reused the Toyota bolts....

Anyway, after I got everything all bolted together, I went to spin the front 10 spline input shaft and I could BARELY turn it by hand.

I stuck the clutch disc on it and it turned OK, but it is still very tight.

Did I tighten the gear retaining bolt too tight? Is this a problem?

Never seen this one before. I am ready to stuff it, just wondering if anyone has ever seen this before.

It sounds like a problem to me. Is it hard to turn in N? Does the force change with the gear? If yes and no, then maybe the 7 o'clock stud is in too far and hitting the rear counter shaft bearing.

Better to find out why it is tight now than when you have it in.

I did not use a stud, I used te old Toyota bolt in that hole. Could it be hitting the Counter balance bearing?

Good call, I will loosen it and see if that frees it all up.

Weird plate is cut in Metric threads. Dude told me it was a Spacehghost setup.

Mike told me his were all Standard thread.

I retapped the plate to accept the original toyota bolts as I didn't feel the 3/8" were sufficent. I did grind down the bolt length that is behind the contershaft bearing. It was about a 1/4" shorter.

The bolt hitting the bearing would be my first guess. I could easily turn in nuetral after my install.

I used to have a Spaceghost plate and it was standard.

FYI

When I pulled my plate adapter off, the bearing was a pressed fit in the adapter plate. I was not paying attention and I pulled my rear transmission shaft, consequently dropping the needle bearings, ouch.

In retrospect, I should of opened the inspection cover and jammed a piece of wood in there to prevent rearward shaft movement.

Good luck

I used metric threads on my plates up until this year !

send me a pic. of each side of the plate and I'll tell you if it's one of mine.

do a test fit of the plate to the t-case only, look to see if any t-case bolts are sticking out too far.

My metric hardware plates came with one shorter then factory bolt.

OK, got the metric bolts now.

Alright, I opened the side cover, REMOVED the 7 O'clock bolt and it is still nearly frozen.

I spun the transfer case gears and they did just fine.

Damn thing is on the tranny jack under the Cruiser ready to be stuffed.

Any ideas before I take it out and start over?

So you are saying that the output shaft turns ok with the transfer case gears?
It would appear there is something in the transmission that is binding up. Pull off the trans. PTO cover or shifter cover and see if everything is in the proper order. It is very easy to have the mainshaft move backwards and the needle bearings drop out.
Did Tom send you the bolts and washer for output shaft? The plate was a spaceghost item. As I said I just tapped the holes to use the stock metric bolts. It worked fine. Tom only took it out to put the Rock Box in.

I would take it apart and find out why. It should spin pretty easy, like 2 ft lbs, so something is wrong. It isn't that hard to take apart and put back together.

Butch grabbed one in his shop for me and said it was very hard to turn by hand too.

I am really thinking about stabbing this bitch anyway.

It is on the jack and under the truck (which was a bear in itself)

I will let you know how it turns out.

If it is in a gear, it would be hard to turn. If it is in neutral, the input shaft should turn easy. When you are installing the unit it helps to be able to rotate the input shaft to line up the splines in the clutch disk. With the transmission in 4th gear and the transfer case in high, the shaft should rotate easily.
Hope this isn't going to be an exercise in install and remove.
Good luck.

Nolen,
I just back home from being out of town for turkey day, about a week plus. So i haven't been on the board lately. Did you get it figured out? Tom

Sure did, I poked it all together and it seems to be fine.

I have a slight gear chirp going into 3rd and 4th. I figure the syncros are bad, but they will do me just fine for now.

Thanks!

Nolen,
I did the 420 swap in my 40 last summer.... and I used Spaceghost's
plate, to 3spd case... and I noticed the same thing going on with mine. I stuffed it in, and it lasted a year before I blew the big snapring off the 3rd gear hub, wrapping it around the shafts. Mine gave no notice that it was in self-destruct mode, and I was lucky that it blew in my driveway (don't ask) and not traveling 45 or wedged between some rocks :) I dropped it all back out, and worked her over, and it has worked fine since.... sorry I'm not alot of help, but I was down the same road once, let us know how it holds up!

Yeah,

I will see. Seemed to go in fine. I will wait until it :nuke: 's and then worry about it. As much as I drive the '55 it could last years.
