Anyone know of a good (meaning cheap) snorkel kit for a '98 XJ?

Hardware store PVC fittings, and a shop vac hose. Route the intake back to your firewall. Unless you usually end up with a high water mark in the middle of your windshield that should be plenty high enough.

ok here is redneck engineering at its best
pvc pipe, (you can get any color but the white stuff works better for the next step) if you dont want to use fittings you can bend the pipe by heating it up (carefully) over an open gas grill. the grill gives a wide enuf and even enuf flame to control your bend. get one guy on one end you on the other and turn it over the heat till it gets soft enuf to bend. bend it to angle and hold it till it is cool or it will spring back.
or you can just say fawkit and use fittings.
but you will need a connection for your carb. and here is the cheap arse ghetto solution.
get a sause pan a little bigger than your carb, cut hole in bottom of pan correct size for it to fit on like a typical air cleaner. drill hole in top in corrct place for the hold down screw. cut hole on side correct size for the pvc you are using and seal a short leingth of pvc in there. make gaskets for the lid and bottom and connect to snorkle using rubber connector for that size pvc.

remove handle or leave it on for WTF value:flipoff2:

i did one for a friend that came out realy clean and the connector to the snorkle was tig welded on. it was all stainless and looked sweet.
i am more the duct tape and blue rtv sealant type

I've seen some fabbed out of the PVC before, looked ok.
But i'm lazy, and was curious if there was a real cheap kit out there.
I'll likely do the ghetto fab thing, including the elbows. :)

What about that foil-wrapped hose, so that it has a better way of keeping the heat out of the incoming air? Or is that too fancy??
:D :D :D

Nice work Bruiser.
I'm going to buy one, or make one up that sucks air in from a lot higher up than that though. My driving style, and the places i've been, and want to go demand that i make a higher opening for the air intake.

Not a problem.

If you need it higher just run it up next to your window.

I just bought the 3.5" head from ARB ~35 $(slips over a 45 degree 3" pipe street elbow) and then went the ABS pipe route (I used a rubber elbow at the corner of the W/S so I could get the angle right) - I also designed a box to hold the K&N filter and connect to my intake tube...
