I have a 94 explorer that I just put a D44 and 9" in (disk front drum rear, just like what was on it stock) and I was looking to upgrade the master cylinder becuase the brake pedal feel has become spongy. I was wondering if there was any ford master cylinders that were bigger (ie off a F150, F250...) that would fit in the explorer with our having to make a adaptor between the booster and the master cylinder. The stock master cylinder for the explorer is ~15/16" bore and I was wanting to go up between a 1-1/16" to a 1-1/4" bore. I know that I might have to change the fittings for the lines but that is no big deal. Has anyone swaped master cylinders between fords? What kind of problems did you have?

There are a couple of different master cylinders out there for the X and I was using the larger of the two which is a touch over 1". However.... I had the exact same problem when I made the switch and I hunted that demon for a long time. I eventually switched to rear disc and went to a F-350 Camper special from a 96 I think. The only difference is you have to move the lines from the driver side to the passenger side of the MC. AND make sure that you get the fitting to the rear line when you get the MC. It took me another week to find one at a Junk yard. Now I would say that my braking is better than stock even though I have 35" tires and 8" lift.
At times you might have a hard pedal but I believe that is due to the pedal fulcrum point on the explorer. Without changing the pedal assembly I dont know how to get around that one.

Do you know what size the bore is on the camper speical? Which line is to the front and which to the back (on the stock one), I think I have it set up right now but I am not sure!! I belive the one closest to the fire wall is the front. Is this right?

I think that the size is more like an inch and a 1/4 or so. Off the top of my head I would say that the rear brakes are actuated by the line closest to the firewall. This requires a special Ford only line adapter that does not normally come with the purchase of the master cylinder.

I got some of those adaptors from NAPA because I ran all new line and I ran "standard" size line and used the adaptor to get back to the "ford size"
