Were you with the guy in the Dodge or the guy in the Early Bronco who went in from the top on Friday? I walked up to the top of Motorhome Hill to check snow conditions on Friday, and there's for certain still a good bit of snow, but I'm stoked with how fast it is melting!

If cisco entry is taken does it put you on the other side of the river heading up to winch hill 5?

MochaMike
07-13-2011, 11:16 AM
No.

From Eagle lakes it goes:
1st H2o Crossing
Winch Hill #1
2nd H2o Crossing
Winch Hill #2
3rd H2o Crossing
Committee Crossing (back to Cisco)
Winch Hill #3
Winch Hill #4
Winch Hill #5
Meadow Lake

So, from Cisco you need to do Committee Crossing & then you can hit 3-5, or go down & hit 3-1 H2o Crossings & WHs 2-1

EDIT: There are other important/know trail markers & hills, which I did not mention.

Thanks for the info I was going to go up friday night and travel from meadow to winch hill 3 but thought that csco up to meadow would be fun. Due to last weekends trip to first water crossing and seeing flow I doubt any other crossing is doable either

if you go in through cisco down Rattlesnake road you will have to cross the Committee crossing to do ANY of the trail. FYI that crossing is typically the fastest and deepest of them all

Jason, you'll get to the first water crossing.. people have already been there.

Be careful though. Unfamiliarity w/ what is too deep to cross could ruin the run ;). If it's all you in samis I'd say don't cross over 300cfs.

If your going this way you will hit the committee crossing down frodyce lake the worst of all the creek crossings, though it's a good trail ride down to the creek crossing.
Is fordyce even accessible?

The river is moving very fast and the water is deep. On top of that the "good" lines will need to be rediscovered after the 2700+cfs release not too long ago. The short answer...not crossable yet.

With that being said the trail is usable on the Eagle Lakes side up to the 1st water crossing. Also, meadow lake has been reached and you may be able to get to some trail from the top side.

I planned to try and make it to winch hill 3 from meadow lake and then back up on sat. With people mentioning cisco I was just making sure Im not missing out on another route in. Last weekend I went to first water crossing and the flow was huge so figured all water crossings are non passable till dam release is stopped or limited

FYI

Dreamflows is showing 350cfs! It looks like it peaked on July 6-7 at 2500 cfs and has been going down everyday since. That being said it could be a product of the cooler temps and reduced snow melt, so it could come back up at any time.

I would be VERY cautious in even considering a crossing until it is sub 150 cfs.

As Pepe said....350 is no joke. It seems low because it was so high only a few weeks ago. After adding in tributaries, which are not accounted for in Dream Flows, it is substantially more than 350. Also the changing temps will affect the river flow. As the day warms up the creeks really start to increase flow. Keep an eye out for thunder showers as well.

Spoke to PGE and they are currently filling the lake back up. They are at 103 feet and need to go to 114 before they will decide to spill more water or not depending on temp and melt.

They have closed the spillway and the release is coming out the needle now.

Great pics... I've been up the last two Fridays including yesterday, and it is impressive how fast the snow is melting. Motorhome hill is a third uncovered this week, after having only a few percent uncovered a week ago, and the drifts on the way in are melting fast. We have a few weeks' worth of time, and then Trek is gonna be a blast this year!

So am I correct in thinking that getting to the top end of the trail via Meadow and then down to Committee and back shouldn't be an issue at this time for an average rig on 37's? I might head up that way this weekend.

I would think down at the 3rd crossing (wide/double) it would be pretty easy to cross so I could get down as far as the 2nd crossing and the water fall if we feel like going that far, and then back up and out.

I hear he crossed dead weight? Someone in a bigger rig pulled him across. Is this true? If so good job for thinking ahead and preventing problems. But if you did pull him you shouldn't tell people he “crossed”. The water is still high and strong. I would not “drive” a rig with 33's across right now. From the committee crossing up to FD Lake there is only one spot that that has snow. Right where the mini avalanche is the snow is slushy and could require a little extra effort. Nothing major though. From the lake to the summit there are a few spots with a lot of snow and large holes. But a locked rig on 37” should motor up it.

yes he was dead weight engine off however I was being safe......there were 3 rigs on the other side 33 inch tires whom did make it. Caution though on our way back the river was much higher or harder to cross. Water went over his hood up to windshield and he floated. Had a fun trip all the way from Eagle Lakes out through Meadow Sat.

No snow on the trail but there is a TON of it up in the Meadow Lake area and on the road to Meadow Lake. Tons and tons of 4' drifts and a handful of 6-10' ones still as well. Water everywhere. No ice in the lake any more.

I would kind of discourage using the road for now as its pretty mucked up with mud holes and bypasses. Its melting fast, but I don't know if it will be clear in time for Sierra Trek!

PS- the initial climb on the mud "hole bypass" is on its way to turning into "Winch Hill One-half" :D

Its melting fast, but I don't know if it will be clear in time for Sierra Trek!
Even if we have to plow, I expect to have the event.

I hope that we can get the Motorhomes in. Looking forward to the event, driving up from So. Cal.

Don't worry -- there's more talk about snow than actual snow, IMHO.

We're three weeks out from the event, and the majority of the road in is high-quality gravel-over-roadbase road that holds up well to wet conditions. As for the snow, it is melting quickly, and temperatures are trending up, and traffic is going up, and... :D
