: How's the Travelett Tom?
JoshC 12-02-2002, 10:11 PM Some random search came up with this thread from 1998. It got me wondering about your status....
Well, in light of my penchant for thrashing my truck apart... I've been
contemplating a tow-rig of sorts...
I knew a friend had a 70s Travelette at their glass shop... I happen to run
into this friend after my court appearance this morning (No, the body man &
'72 Scout saga is not done yet..). Turns out it's a 70s Travelette LONG BOX
(from what he said, anyhow).. 35k original miles, auto tranny (hopefully the
727), "large" motor... 345/392?.. His Dad bought it for $35.. the
interior's in great shape, exterior (from what I remember) is fine.. here's
the best part... the previous owner used it for his construction company..
and during a divorce, he liquidated all of his assets.... and sold this
friend's Dad the Travelette for $35... which he then halved with his wife.
I offered "double"... ;)
They haven't used the Travelette in over a year.. his Dad bought a '72 Dodge
pickup that he fell in love with (a beater truck) for deliveries and such
for the family's Glass business.
Now to just see what he'd take for it.... maybe I'll have a tow-rig / parts
chaser / camper hauler yet...
I forgot to ask if it was a 4wd, 1/2, 3/4, or 1T... but if the price is
right...

70s Travelette? Hmmm...
robc10x 12-03-2002, 06:17 AM :( I think that's a sore subject... If it's the same one that got tagged during the night & left for dead.... That was a sad day.... Search back a ways & you'll find details.....
tsm1mt 12-03-2002, 08:36 AM Dang, that was a while ago.. I only had two Scouts at the time!! :D

Yeah, that was a :mad3: day.. but that's not the truck.
AFAIK, the Travelette mentioned in my 1998 post is still owned by my buddy's Dad.. and he still wants more than $70 for it. :D
IIRC, I think it's a 74/75, 8-lug, 2wd. Whether it's "just" a 3/4T or if it's a 1T, I don't know.
The truck I ended up buying (and that got hit) was for sale in Livingston, MT (130 or so miles away). A buddy saw an add in the "Mini Nickel" (aka freebie classifieds paper) in March. I never called.
Sat on it until I was wading through old email one day and saw it again.. it was now June.. and I thought "What the hell..." and gave the guy a ring.
Still had it, still for sale (COOL, it's been for sale for 3 months and hasn't sold.. should be CHEAP.. heh..)
Buddy looked at it.. then in June I looked at it.. and bought it. Couldn't talk him down from $1000, but he threw in two or three extra 727s (tho' the truck has a T98) and a half dozen Holley carbs. I then scraped the black goo out of the disty cap, put a tank of gas in it, and drove it 40 miles to Belgrade and a friend's shop where I parked it.
We went racing that weekend.. then on the 4th of July I came back down, changed oil/plugs/wires/cap/rotor, put bulbs in the tail-lights, then drove it home.
Then at the end of June the following year, after I had most everything I wanted working working, and it was looking pretty sharp.. some @$$hole slammed into it.
I'd owned it for a year, and had it home for just under a year.
Fast forward to today.
It has a dented but roughly straight (and off-color) front clip on it, and is at least operational (not pretty any more).
It's parked in front of my shop, covered in snow, just sitting tight. It's still 2wd, and the heater blower doesn't work (have the motor out and about halfway done getting that fixed.. but hunting season distracted me).
The tired 345 still ticks. :) Driver's door needs adjusted after the hit.
Still runs n' drives great and pulls my junk around.. just a little cold this time of year. Did use it to bring home two engine blocks from the machine shop a week ago tho'.
Oh yeah, status.
Still polishing the con-rods for the new 406. I have the kit, the cam, the lifters, the valve springs, new rod bolts, retainers, pistons, offset crank, etc.
Pretty much just machine work and order up an Edelbrock and a few more gauges to add to the interior.
Headers and clutch should show up in February via an IH delivery truck from Colorado. :D
Got a T19 to replace the T98.
Got my 4.30 R&P and carrier, should have the "YK" kit (bearings) for the front 60 this weekend. Then to get the gears installed.
Still need 'shafts and hubs to finish the 60.
Hopefully come March the motor/trans and 4x4 conversion will happen.. and straighter sheetmetal.
Then find someone to squirt it.
First, I need to get the 304C put back together and the racer out of the work-stall in the shop.. in time for the Feb race, so that's the priority (along with getting the heater going in the Travelette so we'll be warm towing up to the race).
At least I got the parts 200 4x4 stripped and the pieces I need are set aside. I'll get started sand-blasting and powder-coating soon. :D :D
HarleyM 12-03-2002, 05:35 PM Tom, Curt and Ray the two guys that parked their rigs by my trailer at the Labor Day rally have opened a shop in Great Falls and do some painting. I think with a little talking and maybe some trading you could get the painting done there cheap. Curt is pretty fair with the spray gun.
If anyone is ever going through the Shelby area on Hwy 200 and needs anything get ahold of me.

Oooh.. cool.
I expect to have a *little* body work done.. there's a bullet hole in one fender, and a few dings here and there, but it'll be pretty much straight.
I'll have the trim off n' such.. probably just door-handles to deal with.. and I'm hoping to repaint the same (or similar) Blue (save me from pulling the box and having the back of the cab shot, too).
BTW, if you find any 74-75 IH pickups in the junkyard that still have a decent tailgate.. or at least a couple tailgate "arms" I need one arm short-term, and I want a nicer tailgate long-term. It's the one part of the truck (prior to getting hit) that's REALLY hammered.
Your 60 is going to have a good home under the blue Binder. :D Thanks again.

Care to tell a little more about the bullet hole?
There were only a couple of sixties pichups in that yard and they were hammered, just like all the ranch pickups in this area. I will keep an eye out for some though. BTW I don't live at the yard anymore it was too expensive to drive back and forth, plus I'm on call for on raod repair now.
I finally got the set of Dana 44's for the scout now I need to find the time to put them in I am really missing that nice heated shop I used to have

:D Happened when the PO had it on a farm somewhere outside of Livingston.. someone shot it.. so he decided it was time to move it. :D

:D Yeah, I figured most of the Binders have been used n' abused.. one method to ID a 74/75 is the lower valance, under the grille, is one long rectangular opening.. 69-73 have a rib in the center. Only a 74/75 tailgate will work (love these 74-75 trucks.. so easy to find parts.. )

Cool. Going to get a cage in it by Feb for Winter Baja?
I have a bender if you bring some 2" tube.. you can pick up this 196 while you're here. :-) (Gonna take a little work to get it out of the storage trailer though).
I have a bunch of Dana 20s for you.. if you're good at welding cast iron. :(

RustoleumWhite 12-03-2002, 08:52 PM Hey Tom,
cruis'n the BB, and theirs a guy in Seattle that has the t-19 2wd I might need... he also has a tailgate (no hardware), '73 he says, that work for you, or is it '74/'75 ONLY.....
whats the difference anyway.. I thought the box's were the same.

Boxes are different - they mount differently.. among other things, the 74/75 boxes are solid mounted. You can make one work on the other, but they're NOT "the same" (similar, perhaps).
My understanding is the tailgate hardware is different between the two as well.. but I don't have any pre-74 pickups to compare with. :-)

The cage will depend on how much time I have to spare, I don't think I will get alot done on the scout this winter but I do want to get that 196 some weekend maybe have you bring it to the baja and I'll pick it up there. If it is warm over Christmas I should be able to get the axles in.

Well, that gives me something to shoot for. I'll see if I can't figure out how to get it out of the trailer and around everything and into the truck.
Maybe I can hand-truck my hoist over through the snow... ;)
Got a hoist on one of your pickups for moving it around? Not as many places to get 4 guys to grab a hold of it as a 60 has.. ;)
