: Open Message to the Group that left the Campfire problem and mess at Winch Hill 1

I received a PM from a guy that had run the Fordyce trail last weekend about a problem he and his group encountered as they approached Winch Hill 1.

The message is to the group that left that problem for others to take care of.

1. Clean up your garbage. Yes, others will and do pick up after you and other slobs that leave your crap for others to take care but it's your mess so take it with you.

2. :mad3::mad3::mad3: Put out your fawking fires. Thank God this group came by and there was a water source near by. I'm not going to say any more about exactly what they found. Put out your fires. Dead out!!

Now a gentle reminder for everyone else. Although there are no fire restrictions in place yet and it's easy to forget about anything but wet wet wet it IS drying out, humidity is lower and fire is becoming a danger. Funny how I can post about staying off the wet trail one week and watch out for fire danger the next. Weird year!

Keep your fires managable and make sure they are dead out when you leave camp.

Thanks again to this person that wished to remain anonymous for his good work and to all others that clean up after others and help preserve the Fordyce trail.

And people wonder why we keep hammering on about this on the Rubicon. Hard to believe in 2011, people still leave piles of trash or a fire issue in a beautiful forest.

Thank you to our anonymous trash angel.

Feel free to express your outrage at this situation. I'm not really looking to track anyone down so if you have information about these guys we don't need to post it publicly. IF you want to pass something on PM me.

If you think you're the guys that left the mess and want to talk to me PM me as well. I have an open mind. Maybe there was a lightening strike. There were thunderstorms predicted. Maybe the campfire and the garbage were two different groups. I don't know.

Everyone involved in helping out on the Fordyce including three Adopt-a-Trail clubs, all the individuals wheeling the trail, our allies in the Tahoe National Forest service and the countless FOF volunteers are doing a great job and it would be a damn shame for a couple careless people to shut us down.

Don't forget to get a fire permit as well.

went out sat around 11am made it almost to winch hill 1 then issue with lockers. There were probably 40 rigs on the trail headed that way no telling who camped but one group alone had 12-15 vehicles

You can get a permit online here http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/passespermits/campfire_permit/campfire-index.html.
I was camping at Utica 3 weeks ago; I was the last to leave on Sunday and had to put out two fires :mad3:.
It’s unbelievable that this is a common issue!

These threads just make you sad and disappointed. :(

I try to look at it, as 2 steps forward...1 step back. As long as we're gaining a step here and there....we're making progress. :)

The message can NEVER die...look at it like Coke or Pepsi. Everyone knows them...but yet they still advertise a ton. Why? So you always have their name in the forefront of your mind.

Am all for dead and out fires. Sure. But then last w/e we went wheeling/camping near gold lake and we pulled into a developed camp site that was being vacated by another group. We said we'd take over. They INSISTED in drowning the fire ring even though we were there to move in. So we had a flooded pit for 1/2 day waiting for it to drain. the fire we started soon thereafter dried it out. So there can be extremes on both ends.

NEVER an excuse to leave behind trash and garbage, dirty diapers, etc.

It is really dissappointing to see this kind of stuff, but yes it does happen everywhere.... and the really disturbing thing is that they are probably reading these posts on this board and cussing those of us that are upset by this kind of sction out.

Its that mentality that will get these trails close for good you fawking morons.... :flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2:

It is puzzling to me, I was several hours ahead of the group that put the fire out and did not see a single rig on the way in. I ran into a boy scout group at the first lagoon, and those were the only people I encountered. I camped Friday night above wh2 at the second lagoon/ waterfall spot.

It is a shame and it will never be stopped I am afraid. Every time I go up there I always find something for example on my last run beer can, shock boot, foil and cig butts! If you are going to smoke at the fire great! make sure the fawking butts actually make into the pit and not around it.

That seems to be a consistent problem-- why do drivers, on trail or on street foolishly flick butts out on the ground or when walking into a store, one last drag and just drop it on the ground for someone else to pick up later. Lazy and disgusting. Like cans and bottles, they should impose a deposit for the filter butts, like $.25 each. That might slow it down.

I fully agree with the cigarette deposit! Whether you're on the trail, road, or even fly fishin up the creek, it seems like they are EVERYWHERE. I know a few people who just put their butts in their pocket. It's rather disgustin, but I'd rather sit next to a guy with a pocket of butts, rather than seein them all over the ground!

It's a real shame there will always be some people to ruin the fun for the rest of us!

You are outnumbered. The two times I have been to the fordyce trail in the past three seasons there has not been anyone stating anything anywhere on our trip.accountability is a mofo. Hopefully somebody knows who this was and will either clue them in or make things difficult for them without needing to call the cops over it. Even the lamest people up there usually won't trash stuff while people are watching. Somebody was watching enough to put out their campfire for them.

The whole point of this thread and the Friends of Fordyce is to keep things on the trail going so smoothly that we will never need to see the amount of law enforcement and rules that exist on the Rubicon. That is not to say that the FOTR is not doing a good job. They are doing what has become neccessary there.

Yes, we may be self appointed but there are more than a few of us. We love the Fordyce trail and want it to remain the way it is. For that to happen we sometimes have to police our own and yes I incude people that sometimes use poor judgement while on the trail as our own. We all like to have a good time while enjoying the great outdoors and even cut loose a bit but polluting the trail or burning it down is a quick way to end that freedom.

I take the responsibility I have chosen very seriously. But not so seriously that I don't realize I am just a volunteer and no better than anyone I meet on the trail. That's why when I talk to people on the trail I always treat them with repsect. It's why I did not want to find or bust the people that left garbage on the trail and a fire that was getting out of control. I wanted to make a point that these behaviors are not acceptable.

By all means have fun while on Fordyce. Get crazy as long as you respect others, pick up after yourself and don't burn the place down. We are on the same side as hard as that is to believe from some of the posts on this thread but the people that are on the other side use this kind of stuff against us.

Well said Bret :D

Typical quote from typical I presume a cali-guy. I do stay in NM to avoid folks like you. Since you probably do yoga on your off time maybe you should go blow yourself. :flipoff2: Maybe shake your head at someone who gives a dern about what ya think as well.

J. Perez

You presume correct I am a cali-guy, but me do yoga  You posted a useless comment so did I. However thank you for contributing with your second post. Bret did a good job in his post above. Fordyce is not like the Rubicon in many ways!

Like you said yourself, "Last year after putting up with all of the trail savers on the Rubicon it was nice to get to do Fordyce where we didn't see to many folks and nobody walked into our camp trying to catch us doing something wrong or tell us things we already knew. "

Most don't know how many people work on Fordyce to keep it the way you like it. Between the volunteers, adopt-a-trail clubs and FOF there are lots! I will not come into your campsite just to check and see if you’re a responsible user but If you are off trail or doing something that will get the trail closed I will tell you, you are off trail and be on my way. I'm not the trail police! If you listen to me great, we have educated one more person. If you don't listen and keep going off trail it is your decision. You be surprised how many go, "oh crap I didn't know thanks".

Fordyce is not like the Rubicon we try and stay proactive and educate our own so it stay the great trail it is.

Tinman

I also will not come into a campsite looking for "violations" but I do also balance out the "lecturing" with friendly contact. I talk to many trail users when I'm wheeling just to say hi and how's your trip going? I really enjoy talking with everyone on the trail. I usually pass out my card with an invitation to call me if you ever have a problem. If I can't help I can probably get hold of someone that can.
