: Custom roof racks
Ponyracer1 08-02-2011, 11:49 PM Anyone have a sq die for a tubing bender? Anyone build custom racks or sell knock down kits with pre bent rails?
Looking to make permanent mounts on my '07 CC ram and bolt on a rack, some lights on the front, maybe some tabs to pin on an air deflector when pulling the gooseneck, carry a couple canoes when not, etc.
Going to tig/mig on some 1/8" pads, prob 6X6 or 10X6 to spread the load with vertical studs welded to it to bolt rack to. Planning on bed lining the roof afterwards. Prob do 6 mounting points just up from the door edge. Planning on a full roof coverage "basket", 6-8" tall. Thinking 1" sq tubing, 14 ga?
Anyone?

After blending the weld with a grinder, you can't tell. Everybody, even experienced fabricators have asked how I bent those tubes.

What size? What they cost, couldnt find pricing on their site.
I'm guessing 1.5x1.5 you used?
Ponyracer1 08-05-2011, 05:36 PM Those are cool, wondering on price also. Thanks for the link.
SSSRodeo 08-10-2011, 03:20 PM You can get dies for square tubing from JD2squared in Florida.
I have the 1 inch 5.5" radius ones for my bender.

Wilderness Racks are knock down square tubing racks you can find used in a lot of the normal places.
They will fit almost any vehicle with a drip rail.
Making brackets for non drip rail rigs is not that hard if you don't want to buy them from them.

SSSRodeo 08-11-2011, 06:28 AM Nice FIZZLEFRY! Very well done.
You don't have to spend a LOT of money to make a nice rack.
I made mine for my Rodeo on the Budget Side (cough cheap).
Mainly because I saw it as a challenge!

My basket is a recycled sales rack from Virgin Records Store, add some Yakama Cross bars, Bike Rails, Kayak Saddles, and some spare tubing I had laying around and I’m all set. A friend gave me the cross bars after he gave up wheeling and sold the truck he was using them on.
Let me see if I can explain this.
Here is the front half of the rack. The light bar and the Kayak Saddles fold down flat by pulling detent pins. This allows me to park the truck in the garage when unloaded.
The wind deflector is an aluminum truck door I recycled from the metal dumpster at work. I split a heater hose to use for the lower edge cushion.

It also has Yakama Mountain Bike Rails on both sides. The shovel and axe are stored on the ends of the Yakama Cross Bars. The Shovel and Axe holders are ATV Rifle Holders. (Notice the blade guard for the Axe.)

Since I flat tow this truck with my Motorhome I have some extra brake lights and flood lights on the rear of the rack. The rear floods are hooked up with a relay so they come on with the back up lights or I can turn them on manually with switches mounted in the cab or inside the rear of the truck. Here it shows the rear kayak saddle in the up position.

The nice part about this rack is all of the wiring uses 3 flat 4 wire trailer plugs so I can unplug it all and take it off anytime without having to rewire it. Plus when I’m wheeling in wooded area I can fold it all flat, (minus the kayak and bikes of course), and not knock off the lights or kayak saddles.
And being a True Texan, I enjoy flying my flag in Moab.

Here you can see it will carry a 35 inch tire with room to spare.
My rack has become kind of like a Swiss Army Knife roof racks. It has a 1000 lb weight capacity with the 4 Yakama cross Bars.
I have a square tubed Wilderness Rack on my Trooper, but no pictures and it looks like all the others. Nothing fancy!
Hope this helps you figure out it doesn’t take a lot of money to have useable decent rack you can be proud of. And as you can see in R_Lefebvre's build parts can come from anywhere.

I'm guessing 1.5x1.5 you used?
I used 2" aluminum on the rack, and 2" steel for a cargo barrier/rollbar inside.

I forget the price, they were maybe $10 each or something. So not cheap but, you simply can't bend tube that tightly. So if that's what you want for aesthetics or fit, this is the only answer.
The cargo barrier and shelf are AWESOME by the way. I thought about drawers, but this is way better. Drawers are heavy and waste space. This is a little slower to get things out, but not a huge deal. And now I can safely stack things to the roof in the back with no worries on a quick stop, or even an accident.
JeepFreak21 08-12-2011, 02:04 PM I bought a 1" square die for my model 3 bender to make some stuff for my trailer project (fenders and roof rack). I plan on using it for a center console too. It's a nice thing to have around. Bending square tube is so much easier than round when you are trying to keep multiple bends on the same plane.

PS - BEAUTIFUL work FRIZZLEFRY!!
Ponyracer1 08-14-2011, 05:46 PM Geat looking racks guys.
Frizzlefry, god those are perfect!! Do you make them to sell or maybe unwelded kits? Love the dimple dies.
RustyNailJustin 08-14-2011, 07:59 PM Not exactly what you are looking for but it may help with ideas. I built this for one of our work trucks.
