Yes you would have to run links because if you would not the axel would just swing forward and backwards about 280 degrees

1000lb buggy  how  what motor

Ok maby 1150 lbs, samurai 1.3, sandbullet sandrail chasis approx 150 lbs , sammy axles, 32'' swampers.

I don't see why not if you use good springs with a few brackets on the pack so they wont slide side to side? put a limiting strap on the axle. I don't think a little movement is going to hurt but what do I know.:D

Sounds like a bicycle buggy. Leg power baby, yeah!

In a 1/4 ellip the spring is just that, the spring: it doesn't place the axle, the links do.

Put the crack pipe down!

WONT FUCKIN WORK

would love to see that setup in reverse, hit a pebble and say bye bye to mister main leaf. also you sure about that 150lb chassis? What do you sit on? what do you steer with? what holds your gas? what cools the motor? 1150lbs I will belive it when I see it, and when I see it I gaurentee it won't be worth a damn for crawling.

your probably right about the crawling [ light + 1.3+32''=mild terrain ] the main problem is there is really nothing to weld to and i want to try to keep it looking like the original chasis. + to extend wheel base. How bout a one link to controol roll?

The only way you'll know for sure is to try it. And make sure you post lots of pics...

So we can laugh at you when it does everything described above:flipoff2:

it sounds like you obviously don't know what 1/4 elliptical is from the desc above ... whatever you're working on. STOP. before you hurt yourself or someone else.

Sandrail chassis? Why not use the VW torsion bar rear suspension? Use the torsion bar on the outside lower links, and use the stock inner trailing arm mount for the upper links, then mount a limit strap at the center to control the wild anti-squat from having all the frame mounts mounted on the same axis. The inner links should provide enough triangulation, kindof a |/ \| setup.

Everytime I look at my Sandrail sitting in my yard with weeds growing up around it I think that it could make an interesting crawler, but then my buzz wears off and I start working on the Jeep again.

Mike Hendricks (airbag) used a similar setup in the rear of his rig when he first designed it. he used the quarter eliptic springs as his lower links and put a wishbone on the top to make a 3 link. the problem he had was massive rear stear and the rear axle wanted to walk under the chasis while climbing. even with limiting straps he had big problems with it lifting the front tire for no reason. he has since went to reverse triangulated upper links and left the lower leafs as lower links but I don't think he is happy with it still.
OH YA! 1100 pound rig
If you accomplish this, It WILL hurt you if you roll it.

The spring act as links on both my front and rear suspension. the front works great right out of the box. Like D-toy said the rear had to be reworked. Now the upper links are leafs and the lowers are 1.75x.250 triangulated to under the transfercase. This work pretty good. Not as well as Dtoys suspension, but for a light, low HP rig its works fine.

more like 2400 lbs not 1100 I think.

You ever remember when you were sitting in class and you didn't want to ask a question cause you thought it was stupid and the teacher said there are no stupid questions? Well this quesion kind of makes you think twice about that statement. Closest thing I can think of to reply to your question though is that there a guy from AllPro who has 1/4 elliptic and uses them for links ALONG with an anti wrap bar. I think his name is Jay King but don't quote me on that. Ask Chris Gieger and he'll know and maybe he can post some pics of that setup.

I think the idea is scary, but are you talking about a quarter elliptic with the leaf pack clamped to the axle and the frame with no pivot and thats it?

YEP, Tires 300lbs chassie 150-200, engine350lbs, gas 30lbs battery?, axles 350lbs maby, seat lights springs etc ~250lbs,

absolutley no more than 1500lbs

but then i can't figure why my truck weighs 5150lbs toy, mild lift, 32''s, go figure?

Let's see, went from 1000#, to 1100# now somewhere between that and 1500.
Anyone notice how this rig keeps gaining weight the longer this thread goes?
I think you should do it and then post a video of you wheeling that thing. Most of us are due for some entertainment.

Are you thinking 1/4 elliptical or 3/4 elliptical? Only thing I can imagine you would be talking about would be a 3/4 elliptic as in leaf springs with a buggy leaf.

Dtoy is right on the lacation of the pic.
Here are some more of the rear suspension.
