I just got the wife a n 85 Pioneer automatic trans 2.8. Some dick stole her new car a while back. Still wait fo the Insurance co to settle. Anyway I'm a Toyota guy. I know nothing. Since I know nothing how can I search. Anyway after the flaming I do need help. It's snowing, the wife has to get to work. The problem. It won't go into 4 wheel drive. I found a shift linkage that had popped off and put it back on. But still no luck. Anyone know of a techpage with pictures of this. Or some thing to check. Off to the garage. Helppppp!

Check the vac disco on the front axle. I'll bet the vac lines are either off or leaking. Just pull the disco housing off, slide the collar over to engage the outer shaft, bolt the housing back on, and cap the vac lines.

Ok,here's what I found. The rubber line that connects the line from the vaccume line from the engine to the vac disconnect mod. was really loose. so I put on a new piece. I tried it, it still don't move. I tried to move the outer shift linkage by hand and it won't move. Is it stuck? From what I see the inner rod is the H/L and the outer the 2/4 one. How can I move this by hand? Can I put the trans in nuetral with engine off and try to pry it a little? The arms on the shaft with the linkage rods on are straight up and lined up with each other now.

Oh,BTW, I can hear a faint vaccum noise now whe I switch the 2/4 lever in.

Next, I unhooked both linkages at the 2/4 shifter and the vac module. I can't move either lever. Should I have the engine running and in neutral to try this? Not a big fan of crawking under the thing and moving this stuff while it's running. I have it on stands though. Helppp!!!

I got it. I jacked the front axle of the floor a so I could turn the fron shaft. I turns the shaft while working the shift rod by hand. My jeep has a vaccum motor mounted on a bracket on the side of the of the tcase. The vaccum motor is connected to the switch on the inside. It has a plunger that connects to a linkage that connectes to the ear on the tcase. The vaccum motor isn't working. $161 for a new one. I did'nt get it yet, I'm making sure all the vaccum works to it first.

I got it all done. I took off the vaccum motor and repaired it. Had a bent shaft. This vaccum motor was on a bracket on the side of the Tcase not on the axle. I think I'll figure a way to get rid of it. All I need is a shift lever beside the L/H one. Anyone ever done it?

Just so you know, you have the SelectTrac shit, NP229, or 228. 229-->viscous coupling fulltime 4-hi, locked 4-low. vac shift for hi, manual shift for low
228-->Open diferential fulltime 4-hi, locked 4-low. Vac. shift for Hi, manula shift for low.

The main thing is that if your disconnect fails with the 229, you will nuke the VC if you try to use 4-hi. The nice thing about the 228 and 229 is no need for SYE when you lift it:D The 229 and 228 are plentym tough, tehy were used in SJ's behind 360's. Then vacume shift shit is a pain in the ass when it doesn't work, i would check all the lines, as well as the switch. The servos are easy to test: manually compress them, holding a vinger over the ports. 1 should be suction, the other pressure. The main problem im making a manual shifter is that the shifter must have detents to hold shit in gear, as the case doesn't have much for detents.
