Nutserts and lower mounts done

Posted 09-09-2009 at 07:16 PM by JayH (My garage)

Upper mount to follow... It will all just barely fit. Will have to move brake line in order to allow upper some room to move!

Front X-member

Posted 09-06-2009 at 09:41 AM by JayH (My garage)

In the last few days I have once again been introduced to the art of, "oh crap, here we go again." It seems that no matter how much I plan even the simplest projects out in my head, I always run up against something that changes the whole plan right from the beginning.

After chopping off about 30 pounds in crossmember, link mounts, and transmission mount, I went to fabbing up the new front Xmember. I cut the piece of 2x3 to length and fit it up where I wanted and sure enough...

Cross members...

Posted 09-01-2009 at 08:15 AM by JayH (My garage)

Yesterday on the way home from work, I stopped at Central Welding and picked up eight feet of 3x2x.25 rectangular tube for the new front and rear cross members. I had wanted 4x2x.188 but they didn't have any. This stuff'll work just fine. I wonder if anyone has formulae for figuring out the cross sectional dimensions of the structural steel they use for these types of things or if everyone just looks at it and gets a feel for what'll work and what won't?

I already have two 3.5 foot...

No exhaust yet

Posted 08-30-2009 at 09:45 AM by JayH (My garage)

I showed up at Randy's doorstep early yesterday morning. We talked it over and he said that to be safe I should take it back home, cut off the exhaust myself and then build the x-members before bringing it back. He'd build the exhaust around what I put in. duh!

I apologized for wasting his time and he blew it off like it happens all the time. I had been hoping to build the crossmembers and their associated link brackets in small stages and still be able to wheel in between. Doesn't...

Oh yeah, next project...

Posted 08-27-2009 at 09:27 PM by JayH (My garage)

I ordered my 3.8l taurus electric fan from ebay last night for my next project after the belly pan. Shortening the front by a foot or so by removing the engine driven fan and moving the radiator to the rear of the Jeep and then cutting the front off and moving the winch back. That should be fun.
