Clocked

Posted 08-19-2009 at 10:43 AM by JayH (My garage)

Monday was my wife's and mine third anniversary. We took Monday and Tuesday off from work and went to Victoria, BC for a short getaway - no Jeep related activities.

The clocking ring from D.D. Machine came in the meantime so Tuesday I got the case clocked to the most advantageous angle and bolted the ring and the new studs to the case. Had to cut a section of the floor out under the drivers seat in order to fit the case at he new angle and I'm still not completely above the frame...

Seals (and not walruses)

Posted 08-14-2009 at 10:50 PM by JayH (My garage)

I know better than to do this but today on my way home from work I stopped by my local NAPA dealer and asked for a "transfer case input shaft seal" for my 95 Grand Cherokee with the V8 and four wheel drive. The counter man did his diligence with the computer and came back with the seal.

I tooled on home, hit the garage, got under the Jeep, pulled the old leaking seal and sure enough - not even close. Got on the phone with NAPA again and read them the number directly from...

Trans and Case parted

Posted 08-13-2009 at 09:50 PM by JayH (My garage)

Got the 242 I picked up from Brad torn apart - loose chain, hacked input gear as he had tried to install it in his AX15-equipped XJ. He had some troubles with the XJ not getting power to the wheels after that. Re-installed the 231 that it came with and he's got some soft shifts but otherwise, it's working and getting him around. He figures the 242 pushed against the transmission output shaft and applied pressure to the pump while it was installed.

Also got my 231 pulled out in preparation...

Clocking ring ordered

Posted 08-13-2009 at 07:04 AM by JayH (My garage)

Got the clocking ring ordered last night. Pirate is great! I googled 231 clocking ring and came up with tons of crap about dana 300 clocking rings, etc, blah, blah, blah. Even made calls to two of the places to see if they had rings for my 231. One said they were on backorder and he didn't know when he'd have more. The other never even called me back.

I searched on Pirate and ended up over at eBay at DD Machine's store. $69.99, all hardware included and will work on 231's, 300's and...

Got the tcase removed

Posted 08-12-2009 at 10:23 PM by JayH (My garage)

Didn't have a lot of time in the garage tonight but I got the transfer case removed. Transmission fluid poured out of the tail housing once I cracked the case apart from the tranny. So there's a seal that'll need replacing before I can put her back in.

Someone made a comment in the thread on underside protection that any transmission/tcase is just a drill bit away from being clocked perfectly. I don't know what universe he's living in but there's no way I can drill either the 231...
