Hah!

Posted 08-20-2009 at 10:12 PM by JayH (My garage)

Well, I went to bolt up the x-member and wouldn't ya know? I had clocked the sucker too far for it all to go back together. I clocked it 22 degrees thinking it was 12 degrees. dumbass.

I toyed around with the idea of cutting more of the floor out of the Jeep but in the end I ripped it all back out, changed the clocking to 12 degrees and put it all back in. This time it all went in fine and it looks like 12 degrees is going to be better over all anyway.

Taking it out...

...and in

Posted 08-19-2009 at 09:27 PM by JayH (My garage)

Got everything bolted back up tonight - except the x-member. The front driveshaft needed to be about 3/8 longer and the rear about 3/8 shorter. Go figure My front was already pretty far extended from when I stretched the wheelbase. I may have to extend it some again. We'll see. The linkage bolted right up, no adjustment necessary. A few pix.

Clocked

Posted 08-19-2009 at 10:43 AM by JayH (My garage)

Monday was my wife's and mine third anniversary. We took Monday and Tuesday off from work and went to Victoria, BC for a short getaway - no Jeep related activities.

The clocking ring from D.D. Machine came in the meantime so Tuesday I got the case clocked to the most advantageous angle and bolted the ring and the new studs to the case. Had to cut a section of the floor out under the drivers seat in order to fit the case at he new angle and I'm still not completely above the frame...

Seals (and not walruses)

Posted 08-14-2009 at 10:50 PM by JayH (My garage)

I know better than to do this but today on my way home from work I stopped by my local NAPA dealer and asked for a "transfer case input shaft seal" for my 95 Grand Cherokee with the V8 and four wheel drive. The counter man did his diligence with the computer and came back with the seal.

I tooled on home, hit the garage, got under the Jeep, pulled the old leaking seal and sure enough - not even close. Got on the phone with NAPA again and read them the number directly from...

Trans and Case parted

Posted 08-13-2009 at 09:50 PM by JayH (My garage)

Got the 242 I picked up from Brad torn apart - loose chain, hacked input gear as he had tried to install it in his AX15-equipped XJ. He had some troubles with the XJ not getting power to the wheels after that. Re-installed the 231 that it came with and he's got some soft shifts but otherwise, it's working and getting him around. He figures the 242 pushed against the transmission output shaft and applied pressure to the pump while it was installed.

Also got my 231 pulled out in preparation...
