Hot off the laser cutter......."Flat Back" Drop Down Tailgate Conversion Kit For Your YJ-TJ-LJ

Because I can't leave well enough alone, I made a few optional additions to the drop down tailgate kit.

Two panels made out strong yet light weight 3/16" aluminum. This will compliment the aluminum corners that my Jeep will soon be wearing.

I am calling this kit the "Flat Back" drop down tailgate kit. I incorporated the hinge hole locations and toggle latch that were previously on three separate plates. It cleaned up the look of the drop down tailgate kit, hence the name "Flat Back".

As an option, I am selling just the aluminum plates by themselves for those of you who have purchased a kit from me previously. The only change to installing these two aluminum panels is the addition of a new hole next to the factory latch. All other holes will line up with previously drilled holes in your tailgate.

It looks like a nice/stout setup....but it seems like $190 is kind of expensive for some hinges,cables and a couple of plates. Not bashing you or your product, but I think people would be more apt to buy this kit if the price was a bit lower. Just my .02.

1.) How did you figure out the 260lb weight rating?

2.) Can you show a better picture of how it hooks up to the tub? It doesn't look like you are able to retain your back seat from the picture you posted.

3.) Black doesn't match the blue jeep I want to put it on. The black hinges you posted don't match the white jeep you put them on. What do you mean by, "it will match"??

Rugger, I updated the website last night and dropped the price down. I forgot that I mentioned the price on this post.

There are 9 laser cut brackets, some 30 fasteners, hinges, cables, toggle clamp, and 5 bent brackets in this kit. It seems like a bit of coin but it adds up quick on my end.

On a plus side shipping is not a killer as it fits in a flat rate box.

1) Per the picture above with me at 190 lbs and my big boned lab at 70lbs it will safely hold 260lbs. At some point the hinges will bend.

2) I have a steel storage box in the rear. It is an off the shelf item that is designed to fit behind the rear seat about 10" deep. This kit will work with your rear seat.

3) All steel brackets come unpainted. I originally had them painted to match the Jeep but I was trying to show off the hinges and white on white did a poor job of that.

Yes, this kit will work on all TJ's & LJ's 97-06.

Since your CJ tailgate already has the mounting locations for the top of the hinge, you would use the entire kit that I sell, minus the two web brackets that fit in the lower outside edges of the tail gate.

why didn't you use the same latch system at the top corner as the TJ kit. Leaving the top hinge with a pin in it looks like crap.

prettyu cool product and woudl definitely have saved me some time. How do the lower hinges bolt to the tub, do you need to cut the tub from underneath to mount the nuts inside? I had to on my Yj, so if this kit doe snot require that it will savbe a lot of hassle.

Very cool idea to set it up very clean. Are you able to sell with the spider web look? One idea woudl be to have a bottle opener on that area, real tailgate party, hehe!

This kit does not require any cutting, or special tricks for installation. Hence it goes togeather in ~3 hours with basic hand tools.

The webs are hit and miss, some love them some don't, If you have a grinder they can be removed in seconds.

I gotta agree.

Will the tailgate flex enough to notice if you don't install the pin? I understand if you tried keeping a spare mounted on the gate, but if there is no weight on it will it whistle or not seal to the top without the pin?

If you have a hard top on the rear glass will rattle. and on washboard roads you will hear your tailgate rattle.

I could use an electric solinoid with a 12 volt momentary push button to do the work but then It will cost too much.....

totaly missed that.. but now that i look at the YJ kit, i think the TJ kit will work better for my set up..

or can you make me a TJ style latch for a YJ.. or would it be better to just go with the TJ and modify it if needed????

I can take a hint; I do appreciate the constructive criticism, as I am still putting my finger on the pulse of what the Pirate 4x4 crowd wants. I will call the YJ back in the shop to create the two additional plates to replicate the look of the TJ kit. It will be ~2-3 weeks until I get these parts back from the laser shop.

However, the only difference between the TJ kit and the YJ kit are the two passenger side plates on the tub.

How about removing the stock latch altogether and using 2 electric solinoids and a couple gas shocks to lower it? Would that be asking too much
