I recently spun a rod bearing in my 2000 Vortec 454. The motor is in my 92 Half ton Suburban. My primary use for this vehicle is daily duties and tow rig. My question for you guys is... Is building a 496 worth it? Is there going to be a noticeable performance increase in the towing area? Thanks in advance.
I won't stroke a DD. I have a 486 stroker and its a blast to drive, but I would hate driving it as a DD. I would machine the block, bore it .30, throw some better bearings and run synthetic oil after you break it in and call it good.
Yes, I'm talking about boring and putting a larger crank <stroker crank kit> into my 454. The cam i have now is a small cam, smooth idling , operation range is 1500 to 5500.
so this may be a stupid question, but I'll never learn if I don't ask.
How do you know when you "spin a bearing"?
This just means it spins inside the main journal, or the connecting rod big end, whichever bearing it may be. Does it just bust loose and spin with the crank or rod rather than staying seated where it was installed?
Spinning a bearing is kinda just slang for losing a bearing. The bearing is held in place with "tangs", small little notches. Once the bearing is worn enough to where the tangs can't hold it in place, it can spin. So, basically.... My number one rod bearing messed the sheets.
What allowed me to know something was wrong was the knock. It had a deep sounding knock which was probably on the compression stroke that was every other revolution. I also had a high pitched knock which was the piston ever so slightly hitting the head.
