1994 CPI 4.3L
So, this means I have to spend some money right? Does the whole assembly need replaced or just part of it? I remember reading something about certain parts "cleaning" certain sides of the intake when leaking. It smells like gas and the passenger side is looking cleaner than the driver side. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
The symptoms consisted of a bad intermittent stumble off idle all the way to barely running unless at an idle.
Are there any upgrades in the system or does the replacement system last better than the factory one? I read something about a Linder FPR but called and they said they can't get them anymore..?
ya alot of them look this way. This is mine, old and new.
I took all the pieces off of it, and had it cold tank washed(chemical), repainted it and put it back together.
the little rubber seal/gromet that goes around the injector is really expensive and gets brittle and breaks. When I re-installed everything i just put a good bead of silicone where it went and it should seal better too.
I'm lost here. Is there any point to this post, except to display some pics of some typically gunked up parts? Is there a question or some tech hiding in here somewhere that I have overlooked?
If you are asking about replacing the spider..... Uh, did you do any troubleshooting, or are you just going off of "I read something somewhere".
Ok... so I guess I have to be more specific. I thought this was such a common problem from all the research that I've done that I could post up some pics and it would be obvious to a "CPI Guru". Sorry for the assumptions and apparently vague post. Reading it back again I can see where it would be confusing if you hadn't dealt with this problem before.
This is my first Chevy motor and I've been told a lot of different things about this CPI system. Anything from calling it junk to the best thing ever. All I know is that it makes good power compared to TBI and I was hoping to come to the Chevy forum for a little help.
I have a motor that is stumbling off idle and occasionally not running smooth at anything above an idle. I've gone through a bunch of "trouble shooting" testing sensors and fuel pressures and such. Only to arrive at the likelyhood that the CPI is my problem. It is expensive and I want to be sure of the problem before I just start ignorantly replacing parts.
It is my understanding that the spiders are prone to failure. It is also my understanding that it can be a leaking FPR, poppet valves or tubing (basically the spider), or "nut kit" (fuel feed and return lines in the manifold). When gas leaks on carbon deposits, it cleans the carbon deposits. I'm hoping that the picture shows this cleaning (which is obvious on the passenger side) and that someone can tell me that this either confirms or denies a particular part of the system that is malfunctioning. If you look at the other picture posted below mine you will see a "typically gunked up part" with no apparent cleaning from leaking fuel.
The last part of my question... Are there any upgrades that the Chevy people are doing to increase the reliability of this system? Or... Does the replacement of the worn out parts from NAPA or other auto parts store mean that my injection should be trouble free fro another 160k miles?
Again, sorry if this was hard to understand. I hope that this post is easier to understand and the "tech" is more obvious.
Hckstr09 - Thank you for the post, but I don't think you understood my question. It did help illustrate my problem though.
1.) put a fuel pressure gauge on the shrader valve. Its on the right rear of the intake.
2.)turn key on and off a couple times watch pressure go to 50+psi.
3.) wait 15 min...look for gas. if you see gas coming out of something... problem found.
4.) if you still got 50ish its not your injector. you can pull all 6 out apply power and ground and watch them all shoot at the same time and measure with your eyeballs if they're good, but thats probably not it either. Ignore the clean side of your lower (if theres no leak) every one Ive ever taken apart looked like that ...I dont know why... a GM tech probably nows.
5.) CLEAN YOUR EGR VALVE and ports. report back
if your injector is bad for what ever reason I have a known good used one for sale
Oh, no. Mr wise ass already said he troubleshot it, including the fuel pressure....
Not sure how he did that, and is still unsure if he has a leaky regulator, but maybe he's a fucking idiot, or maybe he was just blowing smoke....
Given his ability to form a thread of thought into an incomprehensible jumble of nonsense, I guess it could be either way.
Besides, he read something on the internet, so it must be his problem....
No reason to be sure, just ask us all to guess for him. I'll get out my turtle bones and chicken blood and see if I can tell if his shit is fucked up.
Ok, cool. I can try that. Seems like a logical thing to try. Thanks. I won't be able to report back for a bit because the engine isn't hooked up to fuel at the moment, but I am in the process of cleaning the EGR valve to eliminate that (no codes though).
Can you run with the EGR valve taken out and replaced with a block off plate? I've seen a few posts about it on the S10 forums, but no real evidence either way.

Why would you do that? Do you want to burn more fuel, run hotter, throw codes, and other miscellaneous problems, for no gain at all?
If you want that, then by all means, take it out.
