Help me pick a camshaft

Ok, this isn't going into a 4wd, but there are some pretty smart guys on here...

The car is a 1978 Pontiac Phoenix (think 4th Gen Nova, but uglier). It's just a cheap ass weekend play toy with maybe some time at the track on test and tune nights. Call it 3500 lbs with a turbo 350 and an limited slip 8.8 in 3.73 or 4.1 flavor...I have my pick. No converter yet...that will follow the engine (so suggestions there are appreciated too. ).

I got an engine on the cheap. It's a 97 block with a cheap Eagle rotating assembly...the cast steel crank, 5140 rods, and 12 cc dished Speed-Pro hypereutectic piston variety (the $600 rotating assembly). The thing was a basket case so I'll pull it all down and clean it all up...cut the deck and the heads to get about .035-.040 quench and right around 10:1 SCR depending on just how much gets cut. The heads are 062 Vortecs with stock size 1.94/1.60 valves with a 3 angle and the guides cut to clear ~.535 lift at the valve. It has the LT4 retainer/Z-28 spring kit from Scoggins-Dickey. There is no work to the heads other than cleaning up some really minor flash and pinning the studs.

The intake will be either an Air Gap or a single plane like a Vic Jr. The carb is up in the air because I haven't found the right deal on the right carb yet . I'm cheap...

So far I'm looking at the XE282-HR from comp or an Isky 201272/282. Thoughts? Suggestions? Other ideas?

Excuse the question, but I'm just some dumb guy that works at Ford so this Chevy thing is a mystery to me (), but how do I run a retrofit cam in a late model block? Run a different timing cover with a button?

Also...sell me some tickets for a Nova, will ya?

Figure I'd be ok with a 2400-2600 stall converter on the street with 3.73s?

yup, you will be fine with a tire smaller than 31 inches

use the tightest lobe separation you can, 106-110....

or call Mike Jones Cams or UDHarold...

Elgin E1091p. I used it in a bunch of Hot Daily Drivers. It likes tight quench and at least 10.5 to 1. tight 3000 stall with 3.73 gears. Specs are 105 lobe spread, 99 intake center line, I believe about 252/260 at .050 and 504 lift. Advertised is like 292. idles at 1000 with 6 or 8 inches vac. It is a tight .020 lash solid and pulls like a raped ape from 3000 to 7000. Not very expensive. And sounds really mean. I had the E1090p in my D/D car which is the same cam with an extra .050 lift and then put 1.6 rockers for almost .600.
Bob
Darn here are the exact specs.

comp cams CC306 they have been proven VERY well in the LT1 world. very nice sounding cam and a 25-3000 stall will work perfect.
