Timing issues for sbc 355 build
Okay,
I am not new at engine builds but this is my first chevy performance build...Transing over from a ford lover to a chevy tuff fan...Anyhow I have a sbc 350 bored 30 over with flat tops, brodix aluminum spec heads (2.02/1.60), Reed Solid Roller cam SR294/302 260 @ 50 267 @50...651/667 gross lift, 1.5/1.6 roller rockers, and edelbrock single plan intake, and Predator carb....Oh distributor vac advance lockout and roller master double roller timing set (oh bought this engine complete built only need carb and starter) So Got the motor in and I am having to really advance the timing to get the engine to start...Can someone explain why I am having to add so much intial advance to this setup....Try not to be harsh on me....Maybe some ideas if there is something I've done wrong or is this common for the setup. Thanks in advance for any help.

Not sure but have to twist it to where the side that the wires hook up on a HEI cap is back to the firewall...FYI this motor is in a 87 Toyota.....double checked the location of the bug on compression stroke...its pointing towards number 1 cyl....

A Small block with a locked out distributor usually wants between 32-36 degrees of total timing to run properly.
On a side note, starting an engine with that much timing once hot is a pain in the azz and tends to kill starters with a quickness......... |

Thanks guys for the info. So slowpoke would it be better if I put the advance back on the distributor?? So get it on compression stroke TDC and drop dist one notch behind one?...

Well pulled the dist and found the weights was hanging the mech advance open, so I removed all the weights and springs and welded it solid and got the truck to run but to find out my fuel pump says it puts out 7psi but it was starving for fuel and when tested it was only doing barely 4....So got it running for a few seconds and sounds ratical...Thanks for all the help....
