How many of you guys are running SFI approved Bell housings

One of my drag racing buddies got me a worried about my flywheel or clutch exploding and coming threw the floor of my jeep and cutting my leg off while wheeling.

I plan to run about 500-600hp in my LY6 motor. Im sure that its a rare thing for someone to loose a leg but how many of you guys are running the lakewood SFI approved bell housings for this reason?

Im leaning towards getting it for peice of mind sure would suck ass to loose a leg over trying to save 500 bucks

How often do you plan on catching traction at WOT from a dead stop? really the only time you'll donate something bad enough to penetrate the trans, and firewall/ floor that I'm aware of? Look at NASCAR how often to they blow clutches?

I dont, i plan on dumping the clutch at about 4000 rpm in 4 wheel drive and launching at the mud drags etc and tough truck challanges

I dont see me ever going WOT on pavement and dumping the clutch.

sounds like i am over thinking this, but fuck that would suck to have one fail on you

I hear you there. Mud drags may be one place to consider one, same as any other drag application. I could imagine similar forces being applied. I asked because I was assuming rock crawling or desert racing ( where you don't typically see the same forces as drag). I think I'd look into how many have actually had issues with exploding parts in your application. Personally if your that concerned, peace of mind doesn't carry a price. My broke ass would probably weld some extra metal between me and the driveline if it concerned me. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will come along shortly.

ya i was thinking about making 2 peices of 1/4 plate and cutting out some brackets on the torchmate and making my own cover, surely 1/4 plate would stop a flywheel or clutch

Tuck the drivetrain, safety loops for the driveshaft, one big plate across the belly so you hydroplane and call it a day. Don't ask, I'm bored.

is it worth your foot? i would hate to be that one guy you know.

im sure there are some pretty easy fixex for this besides a sfi... like welding some 3/16th plate to your floor where the bell is, simple stuff.

also the highest potential danger would only be at max rpm. so reguardless of when you hook up or what your launching on that thing is going to wreck the most crap when its wound up. just something to think about for you guys who think your safe cause your not on asphalt.

i dunno youtube clutch explosion.

If you even think you need it, just get one, and install it.

A buddy of mine got a brand new SFI housing, but wanted to race that weekend rather than put in his bellhousing. 1st run his flywheel parted company with the car, ripped the firewall to shreds, sliced through the passenger side header, and sent a couple pieces of flywheel right next to his foot and into the dash. He was extremely lucky that day.

Alex.
