TBI 454 cam recommendations

While my engine's getting rebuilt, I'm gonna take this opportunity to slap a mild (READ: smog legal) cam in it. I'd like to see what you guys suggest. It's basically a stock TBI 454 (but I'll probably put a chip in it later), anybody have any recommendations?

I haven't done my TBI 454 yet, but a couple years ago I built a TBI 406 and used Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 268. I didn't trip any lights, and ran like a mother fucker!! I did use a High Energy 268 in a carb'd 454 in my old truck, and than ran real good. Would easily smoke the 35s with 3.73s in it. But I couldn't tell you on the emissions, they don't have that here, yet. Sorry.

TBI's were flat tappets. Hydro Roller's didn't start until the Vortec MPI in 96.

make sure to use a fairly mild cam, otherwise the thing wont run. tbi motors need a good vaccum signal to run, higher lift and shorter duration will net u the best results, more flow while maintaining driveabilty. my buddy put 2 hot a cam in his and the computers stock programed parrameters cant figure out why the thing wont read much of anything with the map sensor. and i know the small blocks went to roller hydraulic lifters about 1987, but im not sure when the bb's upgraded to roller.

When your looking for a cam see if it has recomendations for TBI. Something like an RV cam.

Keeping the specs under 214o intake duration @ .050" and 224o exhaust duration @ .050" will still run with a TBI in most cases.

this man speaks the truth. if u want more power beyond that get rocker arms with a higher ratio, that will net u lift (read: flow) while maintaining vaccuum (read: it will still run). tbi 454s have terrible compression, like 7.5:1, have a machine shop face some off your heads to bump that up, it will help tons!
