Ram Assist Q:

So I have a K5 with a D60 front and 14FF rear. I want to do ram assist. Question Will a 1.5in bore with a 6in stroke work or do I need bigger?
And if anyone has any other tips thats great as I will attempt to do myself.

D60's need an 8" stroke, but you still have to limit them down to about 7"'s.

yup on the 8"--and the smaller the ram the faster and less power it has--the bigger the ram the slower it is but has more power--

that said I have the 2" ram and it does excellent except the very fast turn during my desert running. I just have to plan ahead.

I went the 1.75" route, not sure how it will perform but Ive heard of some issue with the 5/8" rod in most 1.5" rams deflecting causing the seal to leak. I drive mine around town and to and from trails as well so the 2" was going to be a little slow for me as well without going to a KRC pump or something.

Its trial and error---hook up the lines and turn the wheel (with fluid in it of course) and if the tire wants to go the other direction flip the lines. it makes it easier if the axle is on jackstands too.

Not to hijack the thread, but what is the best way to limit the travel of the ram?

Machined steel spacers, not the easiest and not the route Im trying first but IMO that would be the best option(stainless if care to machine it may even work better so it won't corrode).

Im trying the leaf spring bushing cut down route with some heavy washers, some have done it and say it works, we will have to see.

Open up the ram. Put a piece of thick walled tube cut to the right length on the shaft. Reassemble.

this should work and I have been told it will, but I just kinda know when the ram is pushing too much and I stop there. I'm sure i will be eating my words but thats the fun part right.

thanks. So far the only thing i will be adding is bumpstops. I did already add a traction bar and it has helped A LOT on the axle wrap (It feels a little weird climbing but I haven't tried it in the real stuff.) the front shocks are a little soft for the speedy stuff but ill keep them for a little while and see how it goes.

Over all I am VERY happy with the way she turned out.--now I need bigger tires

On the trac bar/wrap bar or whatever anyone calls it, ill get some pics up soon.

the rear springs are 57" ford 1/2 ton springs. I ran the rancho 5000's (equivilant to the procomp 3000) and hated them. way too stiff, especially with an off the shelf lift spring. personal expirence only. I dont think I have ever been happier with spending a little bit more on good shocks. it really does make a difference. on the front I have the Bilstein 5125's with 255/75 valving, and for my application I think I am going to go a little bit stiffer shock. The soft springs and soft shocks don't go well. But, it's a HELL of a lot better, but I think I can go more. You don't have to spend mucho $$ on shocks but the little bit more you spend the MUCH better the shock will be. I will say this from personal expirence--if you go with some bilsteins go through Mad4WD.

Go to the redneck ram sight for instructions on modifying the ps pump. Takes about an hour if you are just drilling out the orifice. Made a huge difference in my set up.
