Can you weld the spider gears in a gov-loc 14 bolt ff?

You'd have to totally remove the locker, and even then I'm not sure. The only reason I'm replying is because about two weeks ago we popped my diff open and found a govloc. There was no way it could be welded without pulling out of the housing so we just put it back together. I'm going to give it a shot and see how it works. At the time we openned it the truck had never been offroad.

I welded mine up, after asking the same question here. Just remove everything that is part of the locker, clutches, springs, that little gear/lever thing. Then it's as simple as welding an open diff but has 3 posts instead of 4.

pulled mine back apart only to find the spider gears had exsploaded! so I welded the side gears to the carrier. I have an extra carrier so if this fails guess I will have to try again.

If you trashed your carrier you may want to look at the 14b spool. You have a lot of weight and sounds like HP. Not to say a properly welded 14 b is not strong enough. There is threads on how to do it with pictures. The best way is pull the carrier out and weld it out of the axle. I welded mine, and run the piss out of it. Works great.

Isn't that the only way to do it? I have no clue how you would go about welding a 14ff, open or govlock, with the carrier still in the axle. Just weld and weld, throw some metal in and weld that, then weld some more. If you make the whole thing a ball of metal and can weld worth a crap, it should hold.

where is the best place to get a spool for the 14 bolt? I have broke two sets of spider gears. I am thinkin the 40's and nos seem to be alittle much for a welded carrier.
