ECM Question
All of this is for a 96 Chevy 4x4. Was the 4L80E controlled the ECM or a TCU? If it was the ECM what all is need to swap in a 4L80E in place of a 4L60E? Is there any rewiring to be done? Where is the Vss suppose to be placed?

Not sure about '96, but in '95, the PCM controlled the trans, whether it be a -60E or a -80E. The harness for the -80E may a little different, or maybe the same for both trans, but some wires not used with the -60E apps. The -80E uses two sensors--one to tell the PCM the tranny input RPM's, and one (a VSS) to give vehickle speed.
You need to get wiring diagrams for both apps and compare them.

You need to change the wire harness plug for the transmission and add some wires. And you need to have the PCM (computer) tuned for the 4l80. I am unsure if that PCM can just be flashed or needs use something like tunercats. The later ones can be easily tunded for the 4l80. The VSS needs to be placed in the transfer case, thats were it's at stock. You will also need to modify or get a different trans cross member as the 80 is longer as well as modify the driveshfts.
