73-87 Saginaw Sector Shaft Swap
Anyone have a link to how to swap the sector shafts between the 4wd box and the 2wd box for crossover steering?
I had a great link here on Pirate, a guy documented the whole process of rebuilding a Saginaw box. Problem is the computer I had it bookmarked is FUBAR.... and now I can't find it in the search. I did read a post where another guy said just swapping shafts is as easy as 1, 2, 3.... remove top cap, snap rings on bottom and whala... Somehow I just don't think it's that easy.... I had my setup all ready to go. In the truck and everything. Until I went to connnect the hydraulic lines and discovered my buddy tapped the holes too deep, and now the fittings bottom out on the piston that rotates with the steering column..... FUCK! I've got the orig 4wd box sitting on the floor, so I thought I would swap the shafts and start over (and this time I will tap the holes....). Thanks! |

you can say that again. I would try grinding a couple threads off of the fittings, or buying different ones. Sometimes a different fitting will not screw in as far. Also could tap to the next size and use a bushing.
Sorry, cant help with the sector shaft thing.

I did grind 3 or 4 threads from one, and the damn thing won't start in the threads/hole.
I think I might take the box apart, pull the input/rotating assembly out (it's easy), sink the fitting into the hole, and then use a pencil grinder to grind the end off, putting some clearance between the fitting and the piston... I dunno... Now it's raining outside. double FUCK! In my buddies defense... he's a damn good machinest/Tool&Die Maker. So he's used to burying taps. |

heh! replying to my own thread (is that like talking to yourself?)
found what I was looking for here: http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthrea...aginaw+rebuild It almost is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Follow the above directions to remove the cap, and pull that joker out. I did have to rotate the input a half turn to center the three teeth in the window, but other than that, easy as pie. |
