WHat aftermarket PROM chip to use
I transplanted a 1989 TBI 350 into my 1976 k20. I wanted to know which chip would work best the stage 1 or stage 2. The Engine was originally bolted to a th400 in the suburban, but now it will be bolted to a sm465 stick trans. I have headers, 38" super swampers and will make a cold air intake any suggestions would help. Im looking for the best bang for my buck.
PS Im looking for a PROM chip and will post a wanted add if anyone is looking to get rid of 2. One for this truck and another for my daily driver 1989 Suburaban, i have a three inch exhaust for it and not sure whether to run headers or use stock manifolds. If anyone is interested in trading or selling i posted a wanted add on here Last edited by 77 chevy k30; 01-05-2008 at 09:35 AM. |

Not sure what you are referring to by stage 1 and 2 but the stock chip will work fine and if your not going to do the chip tuning yourself you can still make a couple mechanical adjustments to help...just like a carb.
The base timing can be bumped up a couple degrees. This will add that amount of timing to the entire table just like turning the distr on a carbed engine. The fuel, when in closed loop using the O2 sensor will maintain the AFR at 14.7:1. But in open loop it only monitors the O2 so you can bump the fuel pressure up by 1-2 pounds and this can help the topend. This will make coldstarts a little rich also. Then there are the ultimate TBI mods as posted on the thirdgen site to allow your TBI to flow more air.. and we still haven't bought anything yet..... Now the most correct way to do it is to have a wideband O2 monitor such as Innovate ~$200)and the chip burning equipment like on Moates($130) to do a complete new program specifically for your engine. Buying a universal chip isn't really the way to go IMHO. But some people are vrey happy with them.

Prom Chip
On the summir racing site there are two types of Chips that can be used a Stage 1 and a Stage 2 chip. These go for about $100.00, i was looking for the best bang for my buck. and if anyone had any experience with these similar to my application, it sounds like the suggestions will work fine, but im wondering if i can combine ur suggestions in conjuction with the use of the chips. Here's the web site and engine applications with manual trans. They started making JET and Hyper Chips for ECM's way back when. They are not reprogrammers unfortunately. Check it out.

The stock chip works great in my 78 tbi blazer. If you want my opinion, use the stock one until you learn enough to burn your own- taylored to your vehicle. Those universal ones are designed to work in a wide range of combos, I bet it doesnt work as good as the stock one. Spend 25 bucks on a good book on TBI, you'll be way ahead.

If the motor is stock you are wasting your money buying a "stage 1 or stage 2" chip.
