HELP! '90 gmc sierra electrical problem

I got a 1990 gmc sierra z-71 (I figured this would go under the chevy forum). Heres the problem:
All my lights went off at the same time except my headlights and tail lights....The lights on the inside, my running lights, and brake lights are all out. Sometimes I can smell it burning and sometimes where my light switch is, it will smoke when I turn them on....So I really don't know what the hell is going on with it. Is this something I should get checked out professionally or maybe something simple? Any insight you guys have would be awesome, thanks

Sounds like you got a shorted light switch or some wires got shorted together or to ground.
Is this a job you can handle?
Only you can answer that question.
Do you know anything about diagnosing common electrical faults?
If not, than get a haynes manual and learn.
If you think its beyond the scope of your abilities, than take it to a shop.

The light switch itself is less than 15 dollars in most auto parts stores. If the dimmer is not bad it takes about an hour at the most to fix. Hopefully it has not melted the wires in the plug. If it has, check back.
