14 bolt ?

hey guy i got a 14 bolt that i put under my k10 and im trying to find out how to to get a set of 5.13 gears to fit. the axel has 4.56 in now that it came from the facory with and the stock locker. im under the impression that i cant get any lower gears without getting a new locker/carrier. if so any part numbers on lockers around $500 would be apreciated thanx guys.

You can get 538 ratio w/out changing carriers. I would search

Maybe so.... but considering the fact that he has a gov-bomb in it, he should WANT to get a new carrier more than he wants to get the 5.13s.

Just go to the junkyard and grab an open 4.10 & down carrier, pick up some of the readily available 5.38 thick gears and slap a Detroit in it. If you pay more than $500 for a 14b Detroit.... you're getting fleeced.

Maybe he has a 14FF out of a CUCV with stock 4.56 and a Detroit? What vehicle did the axle come from?

Didn't think of that. But if that was the case, it would still be easy/cheap to transfer the Detroit from the 4.56 & up carrier to a 4.10 & down carrier and pick up a set of readily available thick gears.

I have never seen a 5.38 thin gear for the 14 bolt.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I'm pretty sure that they only come in thick cut.

ok 4.10 and numerically lower gears use a 4.10 carrier. 4.56 and numerically higher gears use a 4.56 carrier. Thick cut gearsets are designed to use 4.56 and numerically higher gears in a 4.10 carrier.(saving u from having to buy a 4.56 carrier)

The problem u have is that u need an open carrier for ur locker. so your going to have to buy a carrier. u can get a 4.56 carrier and then buy "regular" gears or u can get a 4.10 carrier (alot easier to come by than 4.56)and buy thick cut gears.

Id suggest a detroit for the rear and an arb for the front.

I know he was talking about 5.13. Good, great.

I was talking about 5.38 gears not having a thin cut option. Because JpSuperDuty was talking about getting 5.38 gears without changin carriers, (second post) but coreylee has a 4.56 carrier right now. (OP) It won't work like that.

So, whatever, maybe this thread got off on a tangent.

gearz

Hey I personaly have a 14FF with 5.13 "thin" gears you can get them from randy's they are more expensive(335.30) than the thick because they are OEM. They are super quite though because of being OEM. For strength they are plenty strong, they are still thicker than most anyother axle ring gear.

If money is not a factor put a ARB front and back cause you say your still driving on the street. the selectible locker will save your "44's" on the street. If it is a problem search for a used set of OEM 5.13 gears if you have an open carrier get a detriot and problem solved or maybe you already have a detroit. I found my set for 150.00 from Offroad design it was Extra they had laying around.

well my buld is looking something like this 85 short k10,about 10" L78 big block(some high compression forged bb i had around)and im ditching my current stock th350/208 for a fully built low geared th400 with a lowmax 205 twin stick ,high angle rear and one of my uncles front shaft 1410 joints on everything,44,18.5,16.5 tsl and my 60/14 combo. i really like arb's idea of open until u need it. im bye all means not trying to build a grocery getter or a street machine, but my local playground are within a 20 minute country road away and i havent a personal hauler or trailer for that matter.

i run 38" at 3k and 70[gps verified]. and with a bbc i could be around 2k and pull the same load.

the bbc will love the extra load, its not like a sbc.

i have a doubler and i will probably be going back to 4.10's and 39"s.

Thanks for catching that . . i edited that post. amazing that still confuses me sometimes.
5.38s are really low if u dont have an overdrive tranny. (for the road)

For any newbies reading this have a search for a good tire and gear calculator. Its a great way to figure out what gears u want for what tires and saves asking alot of silly questions.
