Question CV Shaft Making noise.

Here we go.

After my Suburban drivetrain swap, I started driving around slowly to make sure everything was cool. I felt a vibration in the driveline somewhere. I went about 25 miles and blew the CV. It rattled like hell.

I took it home and pulled the shaft and replaced the CV Ball, Spring, Spacers, and wedges. After reinstall, everything sounded great. 25 to 30 miles later, I can hear it again. Thump, thump, thump, and a slight jingleing sound.

I only have a 4" lift, What am I missing? Do I need to do a Transfer case drop?

Rebuilding a CV is quite a pain and I would rather not do it again if you know what I mean.

Not sure about your specific application and needing the drop, but is your pinion in-line with your shaft. When running a CV, the shaft and the pinion yoke are supposed to be just about lined up (about 1-2 degrees below center to account for acceleration wrap up).

post this in the Gen 4x4 section and PM Jesse (onetoncv), that should get you your answers...

Oh yeah, did you lube the all 3 fittings, the two joints AND the ball, theres a little fitting hiding in the middle somewhere that usually requires a special needle adapter to lube. I forgot to lube a regular u-joint and got about 40 mile out of it before destroying the needle bearings...

well Tell us a little more about your truck. I asume it's still full time since your blowing the CV. The pinion angle corrected? Did you drop the transfercase by chance. Don't do that it's not needed on a 203 and it gets the front CV running at the wrong angle. I run a 75 K5 full time with 4 inches and zero Vibes with the transfercase in stock location.
How much spline you got on the front driveshaft at rest? Lift springs change the arc that the front axle travels and it is possible for a front stock driveshaft to be too long with a 4 inch lift and the pinion turned up. Remember the stock springs were inverted or flat and when they compressed the axle moved foward not back like it does with a lift. Also there was a driveshaft change and one of the shafts has clearence problems. Get the truck flexed up both with the passenger side compressed and with it droop. Under compresion you need to check for the shaft bottoming out the splines. with it at full droop check and see if the Housing on the CV is binding on itself.

After putting in the new Transmission, Transfer case and Axles, I installed a 4" superlift. There where no shims under the springs on the Dana 44 front. At the time it blew the CV the rig was a Full time. After I replaced the CV, I installed a Mile Marker 203 Kit and Warn Lockouts. Obviously, the vibration is gone now. When I lock it in, it does make the thump, thump, thump at takeoff.

There is plenty of spline at rest and have not checked it at flex. I want to make it right, so, what do I need to do?
