Starter/flywheel help

Having problems with starting my truck. The starter is violently hitting the fly wheel and sparking. This problem just started occuring recently. The motor started great for the first two years it has been in my rig. Then one day out of no where the starter was grinding on the flywheel. I changed the starter twice ( yes i put in the shims )and i still have the same problem. What gives? What do you think the problem is?

Did you just throw in the shims...or did you take the time to measure clearances for a proper installation?

You don't always *need* the shims.

Sounds to me like when your 1st starter failed and was grinding that it might of damaged your flexplate/flywheel gear. If you changed your starter a couple of times and have same prob you need to pull out starter and closely inspect your ring gear. Make sure you turn motor over by hand and inspect all the way around cause you will only get frigged teeth in a couple of spots.
