I'm considering putting roller rocker arms in my targetmaster 350 engine. Does anyone know what needs to be done to the heads before I do this. I will be installing ARP screw in rocker studs. I have heard that the casting on the head that the press in factory studs press into has to be machined down to compensate for the added pushrod guide plate thickness and the bolt head thickness of the screw in stud. Is there a know amount that needs to be removed? I will be running 1.6:1 comp cams pro magnum full roller rockers.

are you going to run roller lifters also? need to run a special cam for those and should put new pushrods in while you're at it.
the heads would have to be machined for the new thread in studs. don't try to drill and tap them yourself; i've seen a few heads get screwed up that way.

Orange FJ , The reason for the roller rockers is less heat from friction and they added bonus of a feww more hp's . I'm not going to run roller lifters because I allready have a comp regular hydrualic cam in it, called Baja Beast. I figured on new pushrods too. I'm a machinist so I will be doing the threading and any cutting the heads need for the roller rockers. Have you done this before? just trying to get my ducks lined up so I don't overlook something. Seems their must be some known amount of material that has to be removed from the heads, somebodies got of done this.

Took some measurements and then machined the heads today. What I did was cut .400 from the press in stud casting top at a 121/2 degree angle from the block face of the head. Set the heads on the block with a couple of valves and springs in, installed a stock lenght pushrod, 7.8 " and then the rocker arm. The geometry looks correct.

sounds like you've got the right approach. i just like to warn people because a good friend of mine screwed up a nice set of ported heads by threading them himself. that was years ago and we did'nt know any better.

Well got the heads back on Sunday night. Used Felpro #1003 head gaskets with the extra water holes between the center exhaust valves. Man those roller rockers are nice to adjust! Engine runs good and seems to be about 5 degrees cooler at full temp because of the head gaskets.
