I've got a friend eye ing out a 86 burban. It's got 350 with an auto transmision of some sort. He is curious as to what to look for in problem, and what's a must have and not so great to have.
What trannies came with this, and what are to be avoided? What transfer cases are there in these and is there anyway to prediagnose problems? Any links to web sites with good info on builds, mods, and hunting for decent used ones? And is 2500 a good price with a rebuilt 350? |

If it's a 1/2 ton (1500), it will have a 700R4 trans. If it's a 3/4 ton (2500), it will have a TH400. Either will have an NP208 t-case. TH400 is much stronger, but no O/D. If the trans hasn't been rebuilt, he should budget for that in the near future, especially with the 700R4. 2500 is a good price if the body is in good condition. Also drive and make sure that the trans. is shifting OK. The body condition will really drive the price though.
