ok, I've got an 89 burban, a crane cam in the 350, new radiator, and new 195 thermostat, and radiator cap. when I put the jeep on the trailer and take a hill the thing gets hot, and drops fairly fast after hitting the top, it only gets this hot when towing this kind of a load, I can run all day long with the air on and a hot day with no problem, just when pulling and hills, the thing has sufficient power to do the hills but the heat just keeps rising, so I'm thinking its either a water pump issue, but not sure, or the stock big ass catilitic converter, but on that line, it is a 3" exhaust, so even a restricted one would flow better than a 2.5 one maybe?
what do you think? I really need to do something about it before I leave for moab thursday. TIA |

Sounds like an airflow problem to me. Did you reinstall the fan shroud when you put in the new radiator?? Another possibility is the fan clutch could be getting weak.

timing is set a 0* right where it sais to put it acording to the factory and crane cam.
could be the fan clutch, but when your doing 60mph, shoulden't the air flow hitting the radiator be enough? |

What color is your tranny fluid? I think you might be overheating your tranny and running that hot fluid thru your radiator and heating everything up. Do you have a tranny cooler on it?

sounds like clutch fan is going on vacation and you might wanna "flush" the radiator and see if you have any "hot spots" thats a good indication its not doing its job right. You might wanna try a cooling addative that redline makes it drops avg. temps about 20 deg.

When you are on flat ground you get enough airflow. But when you try to maintain 60 in the hills or mountains or while towing you are adding more fuel, therefore, more heat but with the same airflow.

its got an oil cooler, a tranny cooler, and the tranny lines bypass the radiator and go through only the tranny cooler, the fluid is red, not burnt, and is new. I've got 3000 miles on the rebuilt tranny and the tranny cooler, the radiator is only 1 year old and has been drained a couple of times in that time from a cam change and other things,
last night I did the catilitic converter and put in a 180 thermostat, took the same hill with the same load and it got just above 210, when the day before it hit like 240, but it was a cooler day yesterday too. tonight I'll do the WP, cause I don't know its origion and its easy enough to change, this may or may not help, if not, i'll look into a 4 core radiator. fan clutch is a recently replaced thing too. |

Had a 89 K30 with similar problems, having the radiator rodded out finally fixed it. The coolant from the factory seem to corode the cores fairly fast.

well I threw on a new catalitic converter, and a 180* thermostat, then took the same hill with the same load and it barely got above 210, quite acceptable.
does anyone know what temp it is that the computer comes out of "warm up" mode, I know on my jeep its 180, but I'm not sure with the suburban. |

fan clutch could be some of your issue as others stated, a good high quality elect. fan in place of the mechanical fan will do two things for you, 1. most of the good ones pull more air (cfm's) than the mechanical ones, 2. you wont loose the 15 plus horse power when the mechanical one kicks on, therefore reducing the load on your engine, which can help keep the temp down aswell

My opinion on the electric fan: There is not an electric fan made that is capable of cooling a v-8 @ wide open throttle. As stated above in another post - it takes a lot of HP to move enough air to cool a v-8 engine. Good luck getting more than about 1/2 HP out of a little electric fan motor. Install a good 19 inch (or bigger)mechanical fan and a shroud.
I once had my fan belt come off on the dyno, the power jumped up by 57 HP at the rear wheels @ 5000 or so RPM. (19 inch flex fan) Putting an electric fan on is like pissing on a forest fire!

look at a/c condensing unit, lots of bugs and debris from road time = less air flow, temp rise shows up more on loaded condition. blow condesing unit out from rad. side with compressed air. may help.

that shit is fucking funny.
But whatever the case may be, a electric fan can't hold a candle to a mechanical fan with a good fan shroud.

First off, the guy complains about high engine temps towing up hills. Prolly a dumbass himself, not realizing that downshifting on hills is a must, especially with a smallblock. Also, increased load on an incline will induce higher temps. Nature of the beast. Second, fans don't have jackshit to do with engine cooling when you are traveling down the highway at highway speeds. Third, anyone with a decent set of brains knows that mechanical fans pull more air with a good shroud than a fawking electric fan. Finally, how the fuck are you going to increase the temperature of your fucking coolant and overheat your motor by running a mechanical fan??? What a fawking moron. Rubherchicken fawking newb, go back to your World of Warcraft games and leave the 6 year old problem analyzing to someone who actually knows what the fuck they are talking about.
