Post How much power can a TH350 take?

Want to use an auto trans in my new project, but the TH400 is too long in the short wheelbase (88") I am using, and I am wondering if the 350 will be able to handle big block torque. what do you guys think? I think i'm going to be shooting for around 420 ft lbs and around 375 hp

Have the 350 built, it will probably cost about 1100 or so but it will work.

Thanks Fullsize, but I am working on a student's budget. I was hoping to mostly buy good condition junkyard or used parts. I have access to a stock L-29 big block (454) for $1800 that is complete and has only 20k miles on it... out of a '96 chevy 1 ton. so I was hoping to be able to build this motor a little bit more and then use it with a near standard TH350, but I guess I'll have to use an SM465. Oh well, not SUCH a bad compromise...

the th350 in my camaro is subjected to 500 hp nitrous assisted launches with slicks at the dragstrip. all i have done is put a manual only shift kit in and change the fluid occasionally. but the one in my truck hasn't ever been the same since it got stuck in the river and spent the night there. when it gets hot it gushes atf

I'm running about the same HP and torque as what you want to run with a TH 350. It's beefed up a little bit for towing, but it's fine.

I regularly abuse my TH350 with an estimated 409HP and 500FTLBS.

One of my friends runs a 350 behind a built 518 cadillac motor that makes about 425-430hp and about 575lb-ft and the 350 takes it ok. He has physically broken the case before coming down on rocks, but was able to swap the guts over to another case and hit it again.
