Max tire size for '89?

Ok, I just got a tow rig/ daily driver work truck and need to know how big of tires I can run. It is an '89 extended cab chevy 3/4 ton 4x4. It has the 3 speed auto with 4:10's so it screams on the freeways at 70 mph. I live in Los Angeles and have to drive freeways every day so I need to put taller tires on it to get a better gear ratio. All that said, what is the larges tire I can run without serious rubbing. Will a 32x10.50 rub? If so, how hard is a 3 inch body lift to install?

Should be able to squeeze 285X75R16 under there with a little cranking on the torsion bars.

32x10.5 are somewhat equivelant to LT256/75's and I have seen these on a number of C/K 1500's. I'm assuming with the 2500 there should be no problem.

A 285/75/16 in inches would be 32.8" tall, and 11.2" wide. Should fit pretty easy, maybe a little t-bar crank(2 turns.. or so)If you had 15" rims a 32x11.5 would work also.

I had the 285/75/16's on my 98. I cranked the bars to level out the truck and had no rubbing at all. That was with stock rims though... The 285's killed the power in mine cause the 3'42's in the rears..I've seen some guys here at work running 305/?/16's with a little trimming...

Friend had a '90 2500 NON-hd (read: 6bolt) x-cab short box and used to run 33x12.5 bfg muds on 15x8 or 8.5 rims. Minor trimming on the front bumper and the torsion bars cranked. No rubbing, but he didn't drive it hard either.
However this may not apply to your truck due to the fact that it has factory installed fender flares <IMG SRC="smilies/question.gif" border="0"> and may interfere <IMG SRC="smilies/beer.gif" border="0">

you can fit 33x12.50 without cranking the torsion bars. All you have to do is follow the fender lin and cut the corners off your bumper. Did it on a friend 93 Z71

i have a 90 and i put 32 x 11.50 on it with no trimming at all. they fit just fine. i have had both bfg mud and bfg a/t in that size and neither of them have rubben anything on or off road.

cool, thanks for all the advice. I may try the 305/85/16's just cause that will really help the low gearing. I was planning on cutting the bumper anyway and it sounds like they will fit. I don't wheel this truck so they probably won't rub.

A 305/85/16 is 36.4" - no way. You'll catch the front lip of the rear wheelwells when you stuff them. Biggest tire you'll be able to get under there is the SSR 285/75/16, which is 33.9" because of the deep tread. And that one will be pretty damn close when flexed.
