A friend has a 1991 1/2 ton sub. He was driving today and he thinks he blew up his front diff due to how it feels when he turns the driveshaft. Question: If the hubs are automatic is the front diff and axles turning when in 2wd or is it like manual hubs where the front diff is totally disengaged when in 2wd? On his cell ohone I could overhear that beautiful sound of pissed metal grinding and chunking, music to my ears when it's not my truck

The system only disconnects the right side axle shaft from the differential. The left side shaft is still connected to the side gear, so the carrier will turn in 2WD.
