Question 85 axle question.

i have search and havent found the answer to my questions. so if i missing it im sorry and a hint to here i can find it properly would be nice. im restoring the 85' in my sig. i decided to put all new bearing in the rear axle for grins and giggles. its a 10 bolt with 3.73:1 gears. i found out that the pinion has a chip in every tooth. will a carrier, ring gear and pinion out of a newer style 10 bolt work (88+)? i also have laying around a 12 bolt with a posi unit in it. will my axles out of my 10 bolt work with the 12 bolt? the only problem i can see is the spline count of the axles in which cause if the spine count is differnet can i take the side gears out of the 10 bolt carrier and put them in the 12 bolt posi carrier? if you need more details ask and i will get back to you as soon as i can. i also ask that you dont tell me to get different axles as the truck will be a street truck and the 10 bolt's should hold up. thanks

The 10 bolt stuff won't work in the 12 bolt. The 10 bolt stuff is all the same, junk. But it will interchange.

Why don't you just put the 12 bolt in the truck? Or is it a car 12 bolt?

if its a truck 12 bolt run it its alot stronger then the 10bolt. as far as the axles from the 10bolt fitting in the 12bolt iv never really thought about it. but if both rears are from the 73-87 trucks they should be the same length there for the axles are probly the same length so idk the 12bolts are 30 spline axles the 10 bolts are mostly 28spline but if you have one of the 30 spline 10bolts it may work idk wont hurt to try. but i believe the carrier and the spider gears are both bigger in the 12bolt so mix matching those parts wont work.

as said above the gears and carrier from an 88+ 10bolt will work in your 10bolt fine. just make sure its from a full size the s10/car 10bolts are 7.5 10bolts and wont work.

the side gears wont work. the 12 bolt you said is a posi carrier and the 10bolt a open diff. the side gears for a posi are different than those of an open diff.

pretty sure you can buy 6 lug shafts and they go right in. Friend of mine broke a shaft(6lug) in his suburban and took the shafts out of another truck to fix it. Then he put 5 lug shafts in the back of the truck so he could put wheels on it to move it.
