5 speed fuller transmission - GMC 366ci engine

Curious if anyone has ever used one of these transmissions in a build? I had never heard of this transmission until found one locally for sale and did a little research... I believe they were only used in larger trucks and everything I can find claims a 1:1 final drive so it wouldn't get you any overdrive benefits but I wonder what bellhousings, clutches and adapters could be used for a build if desired.

Wow! That fuller trans brinds back memories. I cant help with bellhousing/clutch fitment, but I think it is standard sbc/bbc pattern on engine. 4th&5th gear ratios are quite close to each other as I recall. I drove a truck/a 366/fuller/2speed rear axle. The shift pattern was 1stlo/1sthi-2ndlo/2ndhi/3rdlo-3rd-hi/4thlo-5thlo/4thHi-5thHi.

I've seen the motor/trans combo on the ground, I didn't know if it was a 366 or 427 though. But it looked like a SAE bell housing (I don't know what #) also it had a adapter bell housing for a bigger flywheel. It was the BBC that caught my eye, its cool that there are bigger/better trans out there for our one tons. It would take a lot to make them fit though, there huge!

I've seen bellhousings go both ways on the tall deck Chevies. Some have a normal looking Chevy bellhousing, just a little larger inside to clear a larger clutch, but bolt up like a normal pickup bellhousing. Others have had an SAE bellhousing. I think the SAE bellhousings were for an even larger clutch. The determining factor between the two was probably the GVW of the truck.

I have a NP542 GL with the 7.33 first gear out of a C60, it has the larger bellhousing with the adapter plate. The clutch is 13". It was behind a td427 originally.

I believe it was Jp magazine that did the Spicer 3053A swap...yep.

The bellhousing from my NP542 appears to be the same one in the article. Now if I could just find a cheap 3053A. Might be an option to the OP.

For ease of adaptability and size restrictions, I would stay with a NV4500 or an SM465. And if you want a super duper uber low first gear, (as if the top two trans aren't deep enough) go with a Sm420.

I was mostly turned off the idea when I found out that 5th was a 1:1 instead of an overdrive, would be no benefit over my current 465 set up. nontheless... would have cool factor and tough as nails for a tow rig if could work behind regular SBC/BBC.

thanks

lol at the above post.

The ONLY benefit I could see running this trans is the closer gear ratios.

Yeah, that and the fact that clutches are dirt cheap and the fullers are WAY stronger than any NV/SM EVER thought of being. Not to mention parts availibility. Though i have no idea what it takes to get parts for the old ass SMxxx trannys.

Junkyards are full of em (SM420's) if you find one that has older stuff. They were in practically everything pre-1969.

You can find replacement parts for any SM trans on the internet all day long.

And considering that the 420/465 trans were used in medium duty applications as well as light duty, I don't think lack of strength is enough to make me want to swap to a fuller 5 speed.

I have a clark 282V66 five speed out of a C700 dump truck, adapted to a 205.
Works great, but shifts like a two ton truck should
Can give more details and pics tomorrow if needed.

Here's the listing where I got it from. I put it in a K30 which rarely sees highway use, but it works great offroad.
