That sucked to hear guys! Our crew siad they thought you all were ok. We hated to see it as we passed by on the next laps but glad you all are ok. That lake bed crossing had a hard left turn right about where you all crashed and we almost missed it being in the dust. I was blind and only made the turn by co-driver watching gps and telling me where to go. It was a dusty day for sure.

Great race Nick, you kicked some ass. I was hoping you would take the overall time. Do you remember the big bump right after I pulled over and you went by? Your rear got lunched in the air pretty good and it bucked me up in the air as well. On the printed map I remember it being a arc of a turn in that section. I don't know what the GPS file looked like. Everyone was all over the place, once we had the fire out we looked around and had cars all around us. That's why they dragged it from where it was before the second race, why 2 miles who knows. The BITD official that took us to medial said something about remarking once everyone had started and passed that point. I hate hind sight as I keep thinking of all the things that could have gone different avoid the collision. Shit happens, I'm glad Bryan was ok and all we had were a few bruises and walked away. |

Man that sucks, I know racing is racing but what the hell!
Hits you, you both roll, your car is distorted and on fire and he just drives off not even seeing if your conscious to pull your selfs from the wreck???? That's just not right.

Damn! Great video of the crash! Glad you guys are okay and I hope there is not lingering affects from the crash.
The TrophyLite is Mike McCarthy from AZ. I don't know the scoop on what happened or who was driving the truck. There is always two sides of the story....who knows. It sure looks like the TL was in the wrong and I'm confused on why they didn't stop for help.

Accidents do happen, but the failure to stop is unexceptable.

He is bombing across the lakebed, goes to follow the little dot on his GPS and WHAMMMMMOOOOOO gets hit and rolled by another car that he didnt have any idea was there because it was closing on him at breakneck speed. Even with Kevins siren there is no way he heard it until right at or before impact (split second, maybe) Not only does he have no idea what happened......because one minute all is cool, the next another car launches over his hood and puts him into a roll. He happens to land wheels down after having the roof ripped off his car. He rolls by because he still had momentum and hasnt fully put together what just happened yet. He and his co-dog do a nuts and shit in underwear check!~!~!~ They realize they are still alive and have a running car, may or may not have looked over to see some yahoo who just wrecked into them and yardsaled his car. Probably checked mirrors and realized that stopping right there is less than safe considering the dust, the debris, and the fact the were just tumbled right there. So they proceed on... Then radio their pits when they get into range and say they wrecked or got hit not sure by who or what but it was fast and they are ok. Certainly the TL driver was a little less than aware, but Kevin being the overtaking driver really is at fault here. Dont get me wrong, I am elated that he and his co-driver are ok, and sad that their car is destroyed. But I dont see where the TL driver can be faulted at all. Just my opinion. Glad no one was kilt or worse.

I spoke with Kevins co-driver this morning, according to him the TL co-driver saw them coming.

I dont disagree at all Jim, but might not have been much of a n option by the time they get their wits about them and realize what just happened. Dont know 'em at all, just saying there are THREE sides to every story.

I think BigWoody is right on there, no doubt after wheels-to-roof-to-wheels the TL guys are pretty rattled. In the video it looks like they're coasting by, not under power and hauling the mail away from the scene.
On FB, whomever posts as BigUglyRacing said the TL guys walked back a few minutes later, truckless. https://www.facebook.com/BigUglyRaci...08435882595642 Quote:

It was def shitty in there. There was some bushes/berms in there as well that could take someone out. Its really BS that the driver of that truck didnt stop to check on you after that and being on fire! I think that pic of me in the other other thread is from that hit, launched my whole car up for sure too. I think we could have taken the overall in that morning race if we did not start dead last and have to pass slow cars in dust all day, but can't change that. Again glad your ok and hope to see you back out with us soon man, you guys are great competitors.

Kevin, glad to hear your ok. After our roll at the Silver State a few years ago I know exactly how your feeling. Keep your head up and build the next one even safer this time around with the knowledge you have gained.
Ultra 4 has come a long way in a short time. I know the desert guys think we are just some rock donkeys out for a joy ride, but once we start breaking into triple digit speeds and passing other classes regularly we need to look at our safety closely. I personally stopped this race season when we hit speeds that were "unsafe" in our racer. This was a difficult thing for me to do. I am super competitive and love the sport as much as anybody who will go broke trying to have a race career will. The choice was to not be a contender, or hurt myself or co-dawg trying to be the next RG. Obviously Big Ugly 2.0 was up to the task of this incident, but hopefully this will make people look twice at there rigs and take all precautions possible and make good decisions related to structure, gear, and prevention. As a fellow racer, I really don't see how the guy thought turning left was ok without checking mirrors. If he had he would have seen a huge cloud of dust coming at him. I think he saw you coming, and figured he could put you in his dust and hold you off for a bit. Kinda like a ultimate fighter who covers your mouth while in the clinch to mess with your air flow. Only thing is you were moving a whole lot faster then he thought! I'm done ranting. Just want everyone to be safe and have fun racing. Kevin let us know what we can do to help get you back on your feet. We are gathering parts for our new car, so time is on our side!.

So I just rewatched Kevins footage about 10 more times.
From the time we see the TL wheels up until he "rolls" passed the BigUgly wreck is a hair under 4 seconds. So in 4 seconds his momentum continued the rotation to wheels down, with a 2 second (human recognition and reaction time) to lift off the accerator and hit the brakes in there somewhere. I say no way that guy had any idea WTF just happened at the point he "rolls" by in Kevins vid. Glad they walked back, but anything being said once they were in the BITD truck, what was to gain by anyone??? I dont think either car really knew what did or didnt happen even with vid. I think Kevin handled it extremely well from all said, and he's the one hosed on a car right now. No one wins here, that what sucks. EDIT: BITD needs to really start looking at this start order. Putting these 500+, 600+HP Ultra4 that weight 4-5k behind all these much slower classes is like starting TT right behind the bikes and quads in the morning in SCORE. This wreck is a prime example. Most Ultra4's can easily attain 100+ speeds. That 2.0l Ford or 2.4l GM Ecotec in that TrophyLite has nothing on BigUgly. Proof in the vid at the closing speeds.
