Team Gigglepin Offroad racing at Croatia Trophy 2013

The Team's car returned from KOH 2 weeks ago, and with a mammoth job list of repairs to be done, the guys set about getting it stripped and repaired ready for 8 days of gruelling competition in Croatia.

A major on the job list was what to do with the axles, and after a tour round the Currie racing rear ends factory before our flight home, the seed was sown, and 3 days before the team left for Croatia a pallet from LA arrived

Here is an excerpt from the teams facebook page:

Wednesday 24th April

Aaaahhhh.....
We knew that frustrating day was only round the corner and yesterday was it.
We received news we did not want to hear and some of the parts we desperately need from the USA have not been shipped and definitely won't be here on time for us to fit them.

Break out Plan B !
Hopefully we will have plan B in full operation by the end of the day (Couriers and God allowing) and we can get this show back on the road.
The problem is axles, or the lack of them! Sadly we badly damaged the rear differential housing while racing at KOH and it needs some serious love. So we decided after consultation with clever people (Dave Ashcroft of Ashcroft Transmissions) that a new direction was in order and we have specced and ordered a set of Axles from Curries Enterprises.
Tony and the guys at Curries have been awesome and we should have the axles today (fingers crossed). However we have some trick Cv joints and shafts being made for the front axle by RCV and its these that not going to get to us......

Plan B is simple (sort of). We are hoping to continue using the current front axle and use the new rear axle to get round our housing problem.
Everyone please think positive thoughts :-)

More later....

Friday 26th April

1am and all is well :-)

The axle is mocked up and ready for final welding once that is done we can get it painted and fitted.
We have modified existing Landrover brake discs for the rear axle. These are from a Rangerover and we will be using Discovery 2 callipers, as they are low profile, easy to maintain and readily available.
The Third Member (Differential to those of us not from the USA) is a beast and yet not over heavy. We have had a touch of genius last night and will be changing the input flange for a unit directly from Landrover LT230 transfer box (Yes it fits the splines). This will means we can keep the existing propshafts and not have to do loads of messing around. Result :-)

The New super duty A frame from Protection and Performance is awesome and will stop the problems we had at KOH. Yes we broke the A frame :-) We are going to have to work hard to break this one though, its serious kit.

Right back to work, crank up the stereo, big mug of tea and get this car finished

The guys finished rebuilding the car at 2300hrs Sunday night and were loaded up and ready to leave for the 1000mile drive across europe, they arrived yesterday and the last pics I saw they were tucking into some road kill and sucking on a few beers. I will try and keep it all updated as and when pics and info come in, once again there is patchy cell reception so it may come in fits and starts, in the meantime here are some pics of the tear down and rebuild and the trip out to Croatia.

Thankyou

the team were out testing today and are enjoying the 30 deg c weather, They have also found the offroad area is quite dry, here's a picture of the area, literally miles and miles and miles of forest as far as you can see:

Rather than having route markers, teams are given roadbooks with Tulip diagrams on for the teams to work out the route, these can be up to 400km long and run either day or night or both. It soon sorts out the boys from the men

Do you think the time you spent at KOH tuning has given you any sort of advantage when it comes to this type of racing? How do those 'treps do out there?

The car is performing really well right now and the suspension is sweet following our day with Wayne and the testing we put in at KOH.

As to with the tyres, we have tried and tested many different types over the years but have almost always used Simex Extreme Trekkers in either 35 or 36", however as our game has progressed we found the need for a bigger tyre and the Treps have come up trumps, they out perform everything we have ever used before. Though the big test for them will be when we get to the water gardens in the valleys of Croatia later in the week

Thursday 2nd May
And so it starts.....
The prologue course was aprox 2 km of Muddy Croatian tracks that can catch out the unwary.
Teams draw numbers from a har to establish their start position and Gary got us a good one, which saw us starting 7th in Trophy class.
The teams race 4 abreast and it's goot down hard to try to get to the tree line first.
Our Group of 4 saw us lining up with Cars from IsraŽl, Russia and France. We knew the Russians would be quick and we gave our 5 litre V8 the fulltime treatment to the first treeline. Then backing off to control the pace of our group.
The Car was awesome and we were running high tyre pressures to test a theory and it was gamble that paid off.
We lept the pace steady backing off on the run into home as we want to start 4 or 5th on day one. This may sound odd but we have our reasons :-)
But it was not to be and we find ourselves leading the field tomorrow :-)
Full and detailed report tomorrow, wish us luck !

Oh yeah here we go....

Yesterday we ran the prologue. This is a short course that decides the start order for the real racing in the forests.
The cars attack the course in groups of 4 with the Adventure class starting first. Team gigglepin are well represented here with Jonathon (JC) Hambro in his gorgeous GP Defender and Jorien Nelissen and Sigi heading up the only ladies team in Europe, in her Desert Foxx prepared Landrover.
Soon the first 50 cars from adventure class had completed their prologue and it was time for the Trophy class guys to show their stuff.
We had had already picked our start number from a hat and were very happy with 7th place. In our group we were racing teams from Israel, France and Russia.
The flag dropped and we powered to the tree line taking the lead in front of the very fast Russian car. The course is about 2km with a nasty hill
climb slopes to catch out the unwary.
We dont want to win the prologue as i like to chase on the first the day and my ideal position is 5th to 10th. Sadly i pace it wrong and we find
ourselves in first place depsite backing off the pace on the way back to the finish.
Its a luxury problem and i am not complaining.
The morning of the first real day of racing arrives and all the teams arrive early to the start line. The Adventure class have a different start to the Trophy class although the courses do cross later in the day.
Before the start I impart some wisdom to some fellow Brits who are here for the first time and advise them to take care on the first few km as a Maltese team had rolled there there the year before. Before long we are away and leading up the field, but after 1km i run out of talent and drop a wheel of the edge of the track...
Despite fighting it for 50m we land on our side! I need to remember to practise what i preach!
Gary works like lightning and within 2 minutes we are back on our wheels and ready to go just as the second placed car comes past. A great recovery!
I soon find my pace again and pass the Ruel brothers on a downhill descent. We then put the hammer down and soon put some distance between us. However...this is not our lucky day and our electric fans fail just after checkpoint 1. Four cars pass us as we take 20 minutes to diagnosis and fix the problem.
Back on the track Gary is doing really well getting to grips with the road book. We soon start to pass the cars in front, but it takes us until race km 45
to Catch and pass Boros Csaba the superb veteran racer and 2012's Croatia Trophy 2nd place car. We are the first Trophy class car to finsh and are over the moon considering our troubles.
As i write this there are still cars on the course and we are not certain of our time but we think we are 3rd overall after adjusted time.
A great start and we a can not wait for Trophy day tomorrow :-)

Just in from Jim:

Trophy day Croatia trophy 2013
After yesterday's first course in the forest we are in third place overall and loving it :-)
Trophy day is held in a quarry 12 km from base camp. It's as hot as hell and bright and sunny as the hundred plus vehicles arrive for the special stages.
We are placed in groups of 5 vehicles this decided by our overal ranking that we we are teamed with two Hungarian teams, a Dutch and German team making conversation interesting !
The first stage we had to make a rope bridge across a 150ft lake and send one man across the bridge before then stowing the kit and driving to the finish as a team.
The next stage was set by the KOH team from Portugal and they choose large unforgiving rocks and vicious side slopes. But the team is full of experienced talented crews and they made short work of this stage.
Next is the individual stage and we are racing for ourselves once again. The stage was a fast blast through the woods before a 20ft vertical drop, followed by a sharp climb and drop into the finish box. The car felt fantastic and we drove the whole stage without winching taking fastest time :-)
Next is the night stage which starts at 11pm tonight. Central European Time
