Fuel MPG during KOH

I was surprised to find out that my little 22RE only got 5 MPG during the race. Did anyone else check their mileage?

I figured to get 4mpg and got 4.35mpg. We used just a bit less then 20 gallons for the whole race. the first 23 were much worse then that though.

We put in 7.5 gal at the BFG pit and then 13 or so gal after the end of the race.

GPS showed 87 miles traveled so 4.24mpg for the whole day. Stock TBI 350 in a 5,000# car.

I heard you guys ran out of fuel. Is that rumor or correct? If so, were you planning on 4-5 mpg and got 2?

that is correct , we ran out 30 something miles into the race, nicole liked the way the car handled in 2nd gear so she ran it in 2nd for a while at some high rpms, so that explains 2 mpg, but we broke a unit bearing a few feet before we ran out of gas. so it worked out that frank hiked to the pit to get our spare bearing , so he carried a 2 gallon can back with him.

We took a touch over 6gal at RM23 (3.83mpg), and a touch over 4gal at BFG remote RM42 (4.75mpg), we made it to RM58 then straight back to the Mainpits hauling ass since it was over for us, no idea how much got put in.
We counted on 4, hence the refuel at RM23 on a 10 gallon tank.

Amazing what a stock LS-1 5.3 that gets teens in a tahoe gets 10-12 less in a crawler hauling ass.

I think we pulled 5-6 in a 3400lb car with a healthy LS1.

When we were pre running we got about 3.5 MPG. The day before the race we replaced the O2 sensors and we got about 5 MPG during the race. I was suprised when we only took around 8 gallons at the BFG pit.

I was planning on getting about 5mpg. But, I just dropped into over drive and set the cruise and ended up getting closer to 7mpg from the start to bfg pit.

I was amazed at how many teams gassed up before Pit 1. I would have thought that everybody would have planned their fuel supply to make the 32 (33?) miles, without a fuel stop.

That distance was unknown until the week before the race. I saw several smallish fuel cells.

There was not pit at 33 miles. It was at the BFG pit which was at RM 42 (if I remember correctly). If you got 3 mpg and had a 15 gallon tank...you would have been cutting it close.

Actually, you could hit the BFG pit from the top of AfterShock RM33 as well as RM42 after SunBonnet.

Heck, Bender and Doc in the FU2 rig added a second fuel tank just for this race which brought them up to a 7.5 gallon fuel capacity .
They had to stop every 22 miles.

We weren't sure we would make the first leg on fuel and sure enough, as I slowed for the first checkpoint, it ran out. I had to hump it down to the pits and back with 5 gals of fuel and a tarp in order to continue the race. I doubt we got any more than 3 mpg, but the engine wasn't exactly built for fuel economy

hoLY SHIT! You must have a huge fuel cell if you didn't fuel @ the BFG pit.

No clue, we never really took on more than 5 gallons at each pit. The first pit was 26 or 27 miles into the race, then the BFG pits at about 42, then main pits again around 62.
