thats insanity being that close for anyone standing there...anything could happen. Always amazes me these races and the european rally races, how close the crowds get and how many get killed.

The more of these videos I see, the more nervous I get when I shoot motorsports events. I thought the Rock Crawling events were fairly safe....
But you get a throttle jockey (I mean that in a good way)that is trying to get up and over an obstale and they are all over the skinny pedal! It makes for great photos...The trick to it is, have an escape route PLANNED!This clown jumped out in front of a guy that was already in the road of a blind jump, by the time he saw the truck it was to late, not to mention it is an almost impossible shot! |

The messed up part is that I was in the EXACT spot where he is standing last year shooting for the 1000. I was back with the other photographers you see there. The few on the road are generally media the ones behind the fence are spectators but they come out in the road a lot. The thing is that it's really tough to cover that spot without being in danger. Even the ones that are out of harms way are WAY too close to be considered safe and that's just how it is. No one ever said it was safe to be a photographer.
You can see in these pics how close you end up getting: ![]() ![]()

I wish more events were like this. I personally don't like to have a big brother telling me what I can do and what I can't do (safety wise). I can tell you with confidence that I would not be standing next to that road. I think you should have to be a little bit smart to survive in this world. If you want to take a risk, then fine. If you pay, it is your loss...
Not saying that it would not be right if these spectators would be endangering the racers (or anyone else for that matter), but if they want to risk it all, have at it. I have watched these truck up close in the slower sections and I have seen them in the fast sections as well. Something in my mind made me feel very nervous as they flew past me and I automatically backed up to make myslef feel a safer. It is a natural feeling of preservation I think. Intersting video BTW, thanks for the link. JW

It's one thing for a photographer, but looking at your second photo, there is only one guy with a camera, and it looks like a personal use type, there is no real reson for them to be that close other then getting the thrill of playing chicken, as sometimes you get bit.

bAJA 1000
In this race no one really stops but keeps going. All kinds of stuff happens and the race sort of just keeps going on. I was the crew chief for Tracey Jordans BC-3 car this past weekend and our concern mainly goes towards him and Kenny Bartrum. They went off a cliff in their car around mile 780 and are doing better. I guess they tumbled down a 300 ft + cliff. They were pretty bangeed up, Tracey had some bad head injurys. I will post some of our photos. Bud Brutsman and Mike Metzger were the other two drivers. They are all awesome people. Baja is a different world and until you are there to witness it you cant be concered about to much but your own safety and the ones close to you.

The guy with the camera is farther back than most of them, look at the chick that looks loaded, halfway in the middle of the road! |

Wide Open BC3 CAR
I spoke with Kenny Bartrum the other day and I haven't been able to get ahold of Tracey yet. Kenny I guess was driving and at around mile 780 after the church and there was a really sharp Uturn that narrowed coming out of it and a tire dipped off and just pulled them to the side. The other side tire slipped off also and the tumble started down a 300 foot plus ledge. Thank goodness there were no ledges on the way down. The turn before that one had about a 40 foot drop off and that would have been bad. I was told that Tracey was knocked unconsious and cracked his helmet, they thought that he may have broke his neck cause he couldn't move but the movement came back shortly. He was taken to LaPaz to a hospital there and looked over. They were both bruised pretty good but they are both doing fine now.
By morning the car was completely stripped top to bottom and I heard was an absolut pain in the rear to get out of the revine epecially with no shocks or coils. I will try and post some pics below. LEFT TO RIGHT: Kenny Bartrum, Tracey Jordan, Bud Brutsman, Mike Metzger
