Which XJ Auto Trans for Jeepspeed
After the Baja 1K, I have got a pretty good idea of what I am going to build for my Jeepspeed now. I plan to go 2D, 4wd, custom axles (9" rear & either 44 or 9" front), 4.0 motor, 231 t-case with SYE, and auto transmission. The thing is, I am not real familiar with the auto trans that came stock in XJ's. Which ones came in the XJ's, and which one would be best to start with?

OK, I see that the cherokees came with the AW4, Chrysler 904 & Chrysler 999. I noticed that Art Carr has some upgrades for the 904. However, I don't think this trans came stock with the 4.0. Does it bolt right up, or is it easily adaptable?
Any other feedback on upgrades, pros & cons for any of the other auto trans? |

The AW4 was designed by toyota and is very similar to the A340. The A340 is supposed to be good for 500 hp (or so I have read). I would assume the AW4 is also good for high HP.
I think BrettM makes electonic manual shifters for the AW4.

the 904 came in V6 cherokee's, and has a GM bellhousing pattern. the AW4 in Shaffer's has been flawless, and runs Brett M's arcade shifter. and yea, jeepmauler has done some very wrong thing's to an AW4

I'm trying to talk my partners into an auto. I would like to go aw4 with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, but budget restrictions mandates we keep the manual for now.
I have a Culhanes 904/999 in my buggy and love that tranny. It took a few times to get it set up just right but the thing just kicks a$$.

Ya Brett M has all sorts of goodies for the AW-4. Also i say ditch the front 44/9 idea, go with a 2wd axle, but keep the t-case

I helped support team 1702 in Baja this year- not having 4WD really hurt us! I intend to purchase a 2WD axle if I race in some of the other MDR events. However, for Baja in a Jeepspeed I am going 4WD. The Jeepspeed class simply does not have enough power and travel to bomb through all of the silt and mudholes.

Ya there are a few races that could use 4wd, but 2wd for most to keep crap from breaking.

Stay away from the 9" front. We had that for awhile for streagth, but with the large center section you loose about 2" of up travel on that side. Go with the 44 with a truss under.
