Budget 85 toyota build
Here's my budget 85 toyota build. Being only a 19year old college student working a part time job, I have to have a budget. I got the truck 2.5years ago and had it stock for about a month. I built it up once, and now i'm doing it right. After collecting parts(Shocks, uniballs, ect...) for the last year I started the rebuild. My plan when I started the rebuild was to make a fun, reliable, 1450 truck for under 10K including the cost of the truck. As it looks right now i'll be in it for 8K without the rear linked. so my budget will probably be stretched to 11 after that. Specs on the build are:
89 4.3L v6 w/700r4 trany. 21in travel kit custom built by myself. 1.5" uniballs, 7/8 heims for upper pivot. 3.0x12in bypass and 2.0x12in coilover. Custom steering, etc... so here are a few pics of it so far. let me know if you want to see anything specific. the start. ![]() mockup arms. ![]() spindle. 86-95 IFS toyota 4x4 spindle. all tig welded. ![]() ![]() ![]() Tubework started. ![]() ![]() coilover and bypass mounts. ![]() Droop ![]() Bump

That looks GREAT to me. I'd love to do something like that in the future.
Are those the factory pivot points for the lower A arm? Bushings there, or did you use something else? What do you have planned for the steering? I can't envision a much better way than the factory-style center link/idler arm, unless you're going to full hydraulic steering.....

the only stock suspension pivot is the front lower arm mount. the rear strut mount is fabricated out of 1/4in plate and than boxed in completetly with 3/16. The front bushing is urathane replacement bushing and the rear is delrin that I machined. I learned how to build alot of this stuff by reading a shit load and then getting out there and doing it. Also I have attended 5 or so races this year and have been looking at everything on these trucks and asking what did and didn't work. For welding I took it in high school and that's about it, besides my job for 2 years was nothing but mig welding for 8 hours a day, so you get pretty good when having to do that.

it's gonna be racing in MDR 1450 class. it's a sportsman truck. hopefully one or two races since it gets pretty expensive to race every month. It'll still be driven on the street but not daily, that' what my 65 chevy 4x4 is for.

got the dash all buttoned up and the gaugues in. Still waiting on the tranny temp gauge. just need to finish up the wiring and hook up the fuel pump and it'll be ready to fire up. Next is a new 9in rear and then the driveline and it'll be ready to test.

Curious about your steering wheel setup...quick disconnect? The stock steering wheel splines/shaft is aluminum correct? Yours looks like steel, howd you get that adapter on there and what type/brand are you using? Thanks and good job on the build.

the stock shaft on mine was steel so I just centered it up on the shaft and welded it up. I made the dash myself. Took me a couple nights to finish it all, happy how it turned out so far. It's made with 3/32 steel and a cutoff wheel. no break or anyother tools like that. just a dril, cutoff wheel, grinder and a hammer.

finished up the wiring tonight. turned out I'm pretty good at wiring an dhad everything ran and done in about 8hours total. All I used from the stock harness was the headlights, blinkers, tailights, and the ignition switch. I just replaced the stock fuse panel with a new breakers box I got. everything turned on and worked and the truck turned over, just didn't start since I havn't ran all the fuel lines. looks like it'll be rolling and running an about a week and driving around in less than a month. i'll post up some pics when I geteverything buttoned up and looking better.

I got a lot done but then school start and kind of slowed my progress a lot. Just need to totally finish up the wiring and finish up the fuel system. Also picked up a 9in so need to get that mounted but I decided to now cut it in half and redo the back end with a custom 3link setup. here are some pics of the lightrack I built the other day for it, just need to get some more lights now. Also as for total cost I have around 9,000 into it counting the 1,000 i paid for the truck, when it's all said and done i'll have around 12 into it after it's all linked and racing.
