Pirate4x4/Shaffer's Offroad race the Terrible Town 400
the first Trophy truck was about 830, the 1705 started 2nd to last (late registration) and crossed the start at 9:08, and 2/3 of the feild beat our chace truck to pit 1, which the managed to make in 19 min :wow:
as we were pulling up to pit one we got a quick shot of them in the corner...

started 17th and were in 4th at the end of the first lap. got clipped by a class 1 car about 4 miles out of the main pit, and damaged a wheel.
took a 4 min pit, checked the front suspension, steering, shocks, rear drive shaft, and u-bolts, added 11 gallons of gas and changed the left rear tire. they were 10 min behind the leader after lap one, and by pit one had closed it up a bit, but had a serious issue somewhere after pit 3. the unibody collapsed allowing hte pass side motor mount to drop through the frame, letting the harmonic balancer hit the trac bar brace, stalling the serp belt, so, the water pump stopped turning, alternator, etc etc... so that slowed there gain on the lead down conciderably, but were able to hold 4th place for the finish. Mike & Camo, Good job!

Wow! Good job guys!
I would have come down to pit and chase but I was clueless on the whole matter. Too bad about the issues but great job on the finish!

while you do have the correct overall race finish results Harry, different classes run different numbers of laps, and since jeepspeed ran less laps than TT's and Class 1's etc, they were the first class finished, meaning mike was the 4th vehicle to drive onto the podium and 4th overall for the jeepspeed class...

Did you guys plate the unibody frame? It would be pretty cool to see some detailed pics of what it took to finish Baja. How are the Dana 30's holding up? I don't understand how they can stink so bad for rockcrawling but somehow live for desert abuse, especially jumping as the balljoints are terrible.

Great job Mike and Camo (I know I should have been there, sorry) so where does this put you in your first points race?
I was wondering about the ball joints too. Since the 30 has upside-down ball joints with the nut on the bottom the joint would be in tension when you land and compression when the tire droops. Seems like with a light weight 33" alum wheel and no traction pulling down (like a rockcrawler has driving the tire down into a hole) the 44 or old 30 right side-up ball joint would be great. I don't think they can be weaker in tension then they can in compression since it's a ball in nylon socket design. I know my 44 took some major air (6'+ every weekend) and hard landings on crappy suspension and I only replaced maybe 1 or 2 ball joints in 6 years.

with the cage being tied into the chassis from front to rear, the underside unibody didn't get any plating, the front wheel well areas did to help strengthen the coil bucket's and the shock mounts. the D30 holds up fairly well because you don't use 4wd all the time, only in silt bed's and sand wash's etc. so 95+% of teh time it's just along for the ride. the balljoint's last 2 races if you are lucky... it's a good thing Napa offer's lifetime warrenty's

This was my first desert race and I had a hell of a good time! Great finish Mike and Camo!!!!
DSI, Jason, Mel and I were pit crew/photography. Mel and I rendered the guys speechless on several occasions, and I think I made them blush at least once. Good times had by all!!Enough about that, pics! Sunrise race day: ![]() Your run of the mill $40K UTV ![]() The TT that threw a rock at me....I was a bit too close tho. ![]() All the JeepSpeed pics are on Camo's camrea, so sorry, no tengo nada que compartir.
