dude, that's not a minivan, that is a truck that is larger than the size of a Unimog. the tires are at least 53" tall if that gives you any idea as to scale. FYI, in europe they race big rigs (without the trailers of course) on road racing tracks. its the most amazing thing. thank you thedon for the thread. i always miss this damn thing. what a kick ass race the Dakar is. its like the baja multiplied by 100!

Weird thing is, yesterday even though the web said Dakar, the TV listings were showing Basketball.

Thanks for the links - no race compares to the Dakar Rally - 5,000 miles normally I think.

saw yesterday's coverage on vs and those big trucks really steal the show. the motos and the cars are all well and fine, but thos big ass trucks are really something to see blasting across all that rough terrain and deep sand. its definitely a lot more different than the terrain in Baja. deeper sand, deeper mud.......
why didn't Robby G run all wheel drive? what were they thinking? they lost so much time being stuck.

did anyone see that show that has that guy charlie bowman or something like that raceing the dakar. This might be from lastyear however.
He did that show with ewin mcgregor "long way around" where they road there motorbikes around the world. lots of good coverage of the dakar, and kind of a personal storey of just how hard this race is. i would put this race ahead of anything baja, or what have you. Simple amazing what these guys put them selfs threw. anywho up here its on OLN. |

There's a "Robby Gordon Motorsports" video-blog here:
http://robby-gordon.blogspot.com/ [ click on upper-right icon to subscribe to the "Robby Gordon" video-podcast ] You can subscribe to the video-podcast (via iTunes), download the daily update videos to your video-iPod, carry it around & show to people. There's a perception problem with Dakar to avg Americans (Robby mentioned it in one of the videos), so it's a great PR tool for Dakar & RGM. |

was talking to a friend of mine yesterday who had been to dakar (to work it) in the early 80's and the first strong words that came out of his mouth when i mentioned it were, "its a mans race"!
i just wish they were showning it later in the evening like 7 or 8 so it were a little easier (schedule wise) to watch. who can get off work at 2:30-3:00pm to come home and watch it at 3:30? unless you're unemployed like i am?

Popular South African off-road bike racer Elmer Symons has been killed in a crash during stage four of the of the Dakar Rally in Morocco.
Symons was born in Ladysmith and matriculated at Ladysmith High School in 1994. He had since been racing in the US where he picked up several race titles, including the Best in the Desert Series - held over seven stages in Nevada - in 2006. He was to have returned to South Africa in 2008 to race for the KTM South Africa team. full story here RIP Elmer |

Wow, what is it with the motorcycle guys crashing out the last few years. Last year there were 2 if I'm not mistaken. On a different note, I long for the days of the old Speedvision coverage. A whole hour a day. The Speed and OLN/VS coverage leaves alot to be desired. At least this year they aren't fixated on the Americans, and have a commentator that can pronounce the names. I'll be interested to see if that asshat Gordon finishes this year. Ok, enough venting.

Gordon is an incredible racer. One of my favorites. He can race anything, and do very well. He has a unique racing style. He races to win, nothing else. He's not there for second, third, or the finish. First or nothing. He runs the shit out of those cars. It makes for some great competition, and great racing.

I never said he wasn't a great racer, I just don't like his attitude. Not a very good sport.

Tons of excuses also. I was disgusted with him and his first performance at this race - overdrove/rolled his VW then pissed and moaned when he had to help his teammate.... Talented but BAD attitude.
