Project Sadomaschositic

(fn title was supposed to read "Project Sadomasochistic")

Or, how to beat yourself up and have an awesome time doing it..

Picked up my new bug for my class 11 build.

1969 sunroof bug. IRS rear, BJ front.

Unfortunately VW never brought a Link pin/IRS car into the states, so I am destined to race a BJ

Looks like the tranny was gone through not too long ago, I have to either pull it apart or have some one pull it apart to see if it has had any out of spec parts added.

A "Freeway Flyer" tranny would suck in the desert.

First thing is to pull the pan and sandblast. Cage comes next (dam rules that say HREW is not allowed ) and then the motor.. 11:1 should be a good comp ratio, I can't wait to pass some Jeep speed dudes

245's are too big. 235's are about as big as you can go and keep the fenders..

Also, I can't run a 16" rim. 15 x 4 or 15 x 5 is it..

Stock class is actually "stock"

I don't even have to run a fuel cell. The stock gas tank is perfectly fine

Got most of the outside parts off. All I have left to do is pull the cab off the pan and sandblast the pan..

I still have not figured out how I want to paint this thing. For some reason I have a big temptation to paint each panel a different color... Make it festive

The pan is as good as I thought it was. Pretty pleased with the base rig

lemme tell you about my baja bug experiance. i bought it when i was 12. my dad traded my motorcycle for it. it was the basis of why i love 4 wheeling so much. he showed me his love for 4wheelin. i learned to wheel in that thing, and how to read terrain. i think thats why i can wheel well.

i had a 63 ragtop, that was converted to a baja. now bear with me, i got rid of this thing when i was 17, so it was a few years ago, things are a little cloudy in memory.

i put the body on a 69 pan to gain rear IRS. i kept breaking rear axle shafts with the stock rear suspension.i cut the front frame horn off of the 63 to have kingpin(linkpin or whatever you call it) for best of both worlds. i cut the factory front beams and put adjusters on them, extended shock mounts and control arms. still used the drums all the way around, cause i was poor, and the brakes were superb cause of the weight. i used beam strengtheners, that run from the beams to the front body mounts, as i jumped it regularly, and bent the front end coming down hard. lesson learned. front end had about 10 inches of travel. i cut the front clip off of the front end from the windshield forward. one peice glass front end that tilted forward. most eggselent when i rewired the car, cause i could sit on the tires and mess with the wiring the bad: the back of the dash was exposed to everything..... as in i could open the glovebox and watch the road..lol so i made a plastic cover and sealed it in. when it rained ( i drove it daily to skool) water came thru the vents and glovebox. out in the dirt it was dust city. the front end was so light you could pick up the front end by grabbing on the baja bars. it made life easy if you hit shit too hard, you normally just bounced off of it. it where i had to learn to use my turning brakes efficiantly since the front had so much understeer.

i used a big set of tierods and ends (cant remember what) and one of those quick steer setups for the steering block. worked great. front end was nimble like a go-cart and i was still able to steer it easily.

skat prodrag shifter, and i took two Ebrake handles, gutted them and turned them into cheap turning brakes

put a cheap little 4 point cage inside, put glass rear fenders on it, cranked the torsion bars like 4 splines and put some KYB's all the way around. the rear rode on the stops limiting it going up, but was cool cause i could jump the crap out of it and not worry about it..lol just annoying sounding. i had to put wheel studs instead of wheel bolts after ripping them out from landing hard, drifting, and doing burnouts (or attempting)

i used to jump it so hard it would pop the street tires on the front
if i remember correctly i ran 30x9.50's BFG AT's in the rear and whatever i could find for the front. took the stock engine, and put a 1635 set of jugs on it, a 2bbl pinto carb and dual port heads. heater box eliminators, and a set of headers w/ a stinger to annoy everyone.... put a skid sheild on it and solid trans/engine mounts. broke 3 transmissions nose peices off, and bent the shifter tubing, pulled the trans mount out of the body, and pulled the nose peice thru the back sheetmetal prolly made like 12 horsepower drove around well, but lacked in the HP department when trying hills and grades on the street. ran a oil cooler all the way to the front after toasting an engine. snorkled the intake under the back glass after a mud puddle incident with it. what a pain listening to the fucking carb suck all the time! wheeled with guys from highskool and kept up w/ their toyotas in the mud, trails and dirt. rocks is where they got me. dirt roads is where i dusted them gimmie a dirt road and it was over. its how i learned high speed dirt work w/ turning brakes. i learned my cutting teeth and making mistakes.

mistakes like: bugs roll like turtles i rolled it twice, both times i was able to flip it back over myself. one of the funnest cars of my life. miss that damn money pit money pit, as in i think i had about 3 grand in it. remember i was a broke ass kid.

This is not going to be a "baja" bug, that is entirely a different class, this is the stock bug class..

Something like this

Sweet, how can you still be married with all these projects? I don't think it will fare to well at the Hammers though.

got another stock handle, cut the guts out of both of them, set them next to each other and put on cable on each one..... put a little spacer under them, so they could be grabbed instead of them laying on the tunnel. sorry, it was pre-digital picture time

bar stock? just take 2 ebrake handles, they bolt in!
just make sure you ditch the ratchet parts
if i woulda done it again, i woulda bent them outward a little, so it was easier to grab when flyin down a road, but i still had no issues getting the rear to swing out left to right, left to right at a seconds notice. seriously, my buddies trucks had no fawking chance keeping up.

Start of thread may 2008. Last page of thread predictions?

I am guessing sometime around 2010 he will drop the motor in and fire it.

Yeah, I know the "baja" and class 11 bugs are totally different, but the vehicle itself is similar, and I love me some old bugs

So this is what you have been doing!

I always wanted one too! I grew up in Phoenix and everyone had one, I was a little more into the street scene though with a BB Z28 after blowing the 302 3 times......Had an uncle with a porshe powered VW thing baja'ed out, that was as close as I got back then.

We are going to have to share notes Jason, we are building a desert truck (7200) now, not quite a bug but you always find the most interesting parts and put things together in an interesting way! Post away....

Hundreds of miles of dirt roads in JV to run it on. Lucerne A & B courses just for starters.
