Does anyone have any good pics or links to truggy builds? I have been dreaming of building something like this for a few years now. Looks like a fun way to get around in the desert.

What makes something a Truggy?

I say solid rear axle, front or mid engine, no truck body...

this is NOT a race Truggy...and it has a independent rear (IMHO they just handle better in the sand and around turns)..... its a sand/desert play Truggy i made for my friend Ryan English in Henderson NV ;

front engine (dry sump twin turbo aluminum BBBrodix) with full manual TH400/Allison hybrid (custom internals to fit the big fat Allison input shaft) and a B&J Quickchange (torsional limited slip, 41 spline, all 300m material)

and another one; i usually dont like wheelies (IMHO if your front tires are off the ground you dont have control..... i guess i`m a control freak ) ... but you dont see many 4000+ lbs front engine truggys doing wheelies

i dont like ass-heavy dune buggys and i hate transaxles... IMPO for a all around "fun to drive" desert/sand/street car a truggy is the way to go

cant agree more, me and a friend almost went in together on that truggy when it was up for sale on race dezert,just couldnt pull the trigger

The origional definition was truck front end (i.e. A-arm/J-arm and engine up front) with buggy rear end (i.e. trailing arms). A trophy truck without a body is just a trophy truck without a body. Likewise a buggy with a body is just a buggy with a body.

Just because someone built a trophy truck, didn't put a truck body on it, and wone a few races they think they can change the definition

yes, that was always my impression ; that a Truggy is a mix between TT and buggy and not simply a TT without body

The Land Shark originated the term "truggy" in the desert world. Although some claim its just a TT sans the body, I think it reflects the fact it looks like a buggy but runs the truck rear. There are some truggy's that are just plain fugly (Mad Max thrown together look) but done right can look badass. The Dunn Tech Truggy above has a couple of clones in the works right now. They are fairly basic with a 6.0 truck motor, powerglide and a 9" rear. The pricey parts are the 3.5" Fox shocks. One of the new owners wanted to put a TT body on it after the cage was complete. It didn't even come close to fitting.

Now for the buggy with a body comment, we like to call it a "buck".

Now to put the name Truggy to rest! Ask any of the boys who worked at Raceco before David sold his company. The fact remains the term Truggy did come from Raceco and Mike Smith will gladly capitulate to the fact that when he worked at Raceco, the term TRUGGY was born. Any questions you have just write and I’ll go to the horse’s mouth to get you the best answers I can.

The term now mostly means a TT without a body but that wasn't how it started. Definitions change.

Here is the Sproule Racing ACECO truggy. I helped chase for them at the '07 BITD Terrible's Town 250 where they came in 4th overall and 2nd in class.

Chevy V8 and TH400 up front with a quick change in the rear.


They have now sold it.

You didn't read any of this thread did you? Like I said it doesn't have a transaxle. It has a V8 up front hooked to a TH400 and a driveshaft going back to the diff.

Do you have any pictures of vehicles running this set-up besides Sproule? It sounds logical to me but aside from Rock Bradbury's jeep that ran Corvette diffs with 4x4 and independent rear I have never seen a trophy truck front running a conventional front engine with trans with buggy rear. The phrase might have been originated as stated in the rdc post but widespread use began to describe the Herbst "truggy" because it obviously was just a trophy truck without the body.
