03+ Ram HD axles and 46s?

Does anyone know what would be the weakest link on a 03' Dodge Ram2500 4x4 CTD if I were to run 46" Michilins? I got a guy in town running them on his 00 Superduty Ford and I know my axles are stronger than his....

I think they still have unit wheel bearings similar to the `94-02.

Yep they still use the unit bearing setup like the older Rams but without the CAD. Im not sure on the axle shaft size, but my 60 has pretty good sized shafts in it and the AAM is supposed to be stronger

front is still only 30 spline at the carrier as far as I know, that makes it a match for the stupid duty front axle. the unit bearing hubs suck, mine have been replaced twice now in 75000k
driving around town is one thing but wheel it hard and something will snap for sure.

Are you sure its 30 spline at the carrier? Mine is 32 at the carrier and 33 on the outer stub shaft.

Im sure a 46" tire will eat the hub bearings for lunch regardless.

you'll need bigger axles than an AAM 9.5 or even a Dana 60 to handle 46's without breakage. ROCKWELLS.

So does anyone make upgrades for these axles? I need 35 spline shafts in and out. What all would need to be bored out to fit 35 spline shafts? I can always add a truss or other reinforcement for the tubes. Can I not upgrade to better hubs?

I want to keep my stock axles, but I'm willing to do whatever to get them as strong as possibile.

Not much in in the aftermarket for the AAM front yet.

The outers would be very hard to convert to 35 outers because of the hub bearing assembly.

You may have a good sized stub shaft already. I doubt they are 35 splines, but may have 33 spline 1.41 outers. Only way to tell is pull out the shafts and take a peek.

So what are the differences betwwen the new axles and the older 94-02 HD Rams? My friend has a 98 3500 CTD and wants to run 40" MT/Rs.

New axles are non CAD, have 14" rotors, different ring gear size. The 98 may be 30 spline, but Dodge did switch sometime late 98 or 99 to 32 spline outers. Not sure when they switch the inners, but Im a ssuming in 2000. I know a couple of guys running 40's on Dodge 60 and the hub bearings are holding up.
The GAWR on teh 99 earlier 60 was 4850 and 2000 up 60's were 5200 pounds.
I also read the AAM front has 1.41" shafts

Some 02's had the Cad unit. Dodge went away with the cad in mid model run 02.

AAM has 33 splines inner and outer.

I had no idea there was 32 spline 60s, what size shaft is that?

The new axle has slightly stronger BJs and hubs but 46"s are too big for that axle or a dana 60 -- see how much they have broke on the USD in Petersons with a full on 35 spline Dynatrac 60? 46"s Michelins are too heavy for pickup axles.

Get Claws or Iroks in the plus sizes if you really want big tires, they stillw ill wear stuff out quick though.

My axle shaft measure 1.5" to right close to the splines and it necks down to 1.32 and the then back up to 1.41 at the splines.
I dont know why they necked it down. It necks down for only an inch before it goes back up.

Im going to get a custom shaft and convert it to 35 spline inners.

Very hard to find a locker for the 32 spline.

I wonder how different the AAM Hub is to teh Dana hub. Ive got 33 outers too.

Saw your post on PS.com -- that is interesting -- looks like the same size as Dodge Dana 70 axlshafts -- wonder if arb will have one for stock shafts -- theywill for the aam shortly.
